“Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 15 February 2011

This is a beautiful small hotel/inn in a great location with a wonderful welcoming and helpful staff. You will feel like you are staying in an English country inn. Our room (luxury king) was very large, clean and comfortable. Lighting in the room (something we find lacking in many hotels) was excellent for reading. The bathroom had modern fixtures and the separate dressing room with additional sink was a great plus. Amenities such as in--room beverages (water and coke products), cookies in the lobby, great breakfast and daily wine tasting all contributed to the feeling that this is more than just a place to rest your body after a day out sightseeing or shopping. We enjoyed the comfortable places to sit and read near the fireplaces and exploring the many collectibles that seemed to be on display everywhere.

My boyfirend surprised me with reservations at this charming hotel to celebrate my 50th birthday. We totally enjoyed our stay from the moment of check-in. Exceptionally nice and knowledgeable staff, clean, tasteful rooms and an unexpected bottle of champagne with balloons! We took full advantage of the wine & nibbles every night, as well as the quiche and other goodies every morning, both served downstairs of the lobby in a wonderful gathering area. Gas fireplaces with a flick of a switch are everywhere, even in the rooms.

Travellers looking for marble bathrooms and uber chic spaces would be horrified by the flowery wallpaper, winged sidechairs, and four-poster beds. Teapots, books, matchstick models of cathedrals of England and Matchbox cars are some of the items tastefully displayed throughout.

The tiny elevator was a kick, and took some getting used to, even after growing up in NYC. There was a small exercise area, nice sized meeting room, two outside sitting areas, and a pay-as-you-go computer available.

Visitors having problems with stairs, claustiphobia in elevators, or chintz, may need to look elsewhere...

What else is there to say when the hotel provides complementary bottles of water and soft drinks in the fridge, a full breakfast in the morning, and wine and snacks in the afternoon? Oh, then there's the fireplace in the room that lights up with the flip of a switch and a flat screen TV with about a hundred channels, if you need it.. The location of the hotel (they call it a bed and breakfast) is only about 6 blocks from Union Square and two blocks from the Powell St Cable Car. At Union Square, you can get the Marti, Bart, trolley's, busses, and the cable car. Also every high end and low end retail store imaginable. There are lots of restaurants within a couple of blocks from inexpensive pizza and small neighborhood cafe's to the upscale and expensive ones.
The Hyatt, Marriott and the Sir Francis Drake are only a couple of blocks away if you want your expensive glitzy hotel scene but honestly, for the price, you get a lot more for your, money with the White Swan. It's a large, clean and comfortable room with a really neat old elevator. The Walgreens about 3 blocks away sells metro passes good for all public transportation. Otherwise keep lots of singles in your pocket.
There is a sister hotel two doors away with smaller rooms that are less money but all the same amenities .And one other benefit is FREE internet in the room. So between the internet, the breakfast, comp beverages and the evening wine, it’s the best deal around. Opps, I forgot one thing, if you need a room with air conditioning; this isn't the place for you. They only have a floor fan for cooling. There isn't AC anywhere in the hotel

We combined business (conference) with pleasure in a recent trip to San Francisco and this hotel fit our bill perfectly. I rode the Powell Street Cable Car down to make it to the convention centre and my fiance rode the opposite way to Fisherman's Wharf, etc. We booked the hotel because of the recommendations on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. Our room was spacious and quirky with separate dressing area (with sink and large mirror), washroom (compact but clean) and a bar with fridge in a converted closet. Gas Fireplace added ambiance. The decor is very "flowery", but reminiscent of an Old English Inn (which is the look I believe they aspired to). Breakfast was very good and convenient and the wine and cheese receptions in the in the evenings were also very much appreciated. Tips.... if you get a room on the street, while not noisy, it does have typical traffic sounds that you wouldn't get on the 20th floor of a high-rise hotel. Location is safe, two blocks from cable car (If you take BART into town as we did), DON'T walk up to hotel from Powell Street station... take a cab!, the hill is steep. Staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. All in all a highly recommended hotel.

My boyfriend and I choose the White Swan Inn after seeing so many positive reviews of it here on TripAdvisor and it certainly lived up to the praise received here! The rooms were clean and comfortable (ours even had a fireplace), the staff was friendly, and the included breakfast/wine reception was actually very good. Add to this a great deal (they were offering 30percent off stays of 3 nights or longer when we booked) and we came away very pleased.

The staff was extremely helpful even prior our arrival. My wife called several times because of our late flight. We barely made the BART, and missed the last cable car. They advised against the 8 block walk and directed us to the most likely place to catch a cab, only a short $5 fare. After staying the first night, a family emergency came up and we needed to check out 2 days early. The staff at White Swan and Hotels.com not only refunded the rooms, but rebooked us for Saturday night, at the weekday rate when we returned to S.F. after taking care of our emergency. All of this with unbelievable grace. Hotel itself is historical, clean and charm abounds. Rooms are older, We were booked the first night into room #25. Other postings here singled out room #25 as dark and drab, but it was clean with a floral print wall paper reminiscent of grandma's parlour, oddly comforting. It actually overlooks the (small) central courtyard, also somewhat charming, and while not sunshiny bright there was more than adequate natural light. Our room when we returned on Saturday was #55. I agree, that room needs a wardrobe, not a closet behind the bathroom door, but it was okay for the night. also the ceiling over the shower was sloped but it never really got in the way. The TVs were brand new flat screen. Internet fairly fast wireless. In room dorm type fridge with complimentary water and sodas. Rooms can be stuffy, no AC, but open window was still very quite, cool breeze and box fan in the room. The beds and pillows are very, very comfortable. Breakfast and evening wine and cheese good. Wonderful chance to strike up conversation with the most eclectic fellow guests, not the usual curt, even rude encounters typical of guests at large hotels. Locale is excellent, very close to Geary, Chinatown, Wharf, all within walking distance, but your calves may burn. Pros: Staff, comfort, charm, B'fast, evening snack, in room drinks, fellow guests. Cons: No AC, historical=old for some people.

If you are going to rent a car wait and get one across the street at Enterprise so you can skip the parking charges, just turn the car in after you are done with it. Easy walk to cable cars (turn right out the front door and it's just a block or two). Fantastic room, very clean (free mini bar, I know I never stayed anywhere with a free mini bar either). They even had q-tips in the room. Beautiful place, nice staff, great location, great deal. Loved the breakfast, and the wine with cheese at night.
