I don't find Japan Town the most fascinating, fun part of the city but the location is actually convenient to get around and the Hotel Kabuki is good - especially for the money. SF hotels can be killer expensive and this was a very good value. The room was nice and comfortable and the staff helpful and anxious to please. The hotel had a nice calm about it. The usual over priced $5 potato chips in the room; $5 for 20 minutes on the business center computer if you didn't bring yours. There are 2 Japanese style rooms which were beautiful. I looked at them but didn't stay in them which I would try to do if I went again.

Was there for a wedding in September 2010 and the group rate offered was much more than the internet room rate. Luckily they do have a form that you can submit with the internet address if you find the lower price within a day or two and that was nicely honoured. when we arrived we were offered an upgraded room for $15/day so while it was less than the rack rate...it felt like they still got you! interestingly, my sister did not upgrade and their room was in the back wing...although their room was bigger, it was dingier with a standard tub and dated. Our room was small and dark. The shoji screens over the windows were quaint but off the rails. The bathroom was unique with a shower outside the large soaker tub to cleanse before bathing as is customary. So while the room was adequate, the location was awesomely connected to a mall with japanese restaurants and "deluxe" japanese dollar stores (which means that things are more than a dollar) with lots of fun stuff to buy. Just out the door to the left were more malls with japanese stores and restaurants and a square with a huge monument to the japanese contributions to the USA. They do charge for parking. A very wonderful area of San Francisco to visit!

I stayed in room 410 for two nights - all you could hear at night was the fans from above the restaurant, the very attractive screens on the windows didn't completely cover them allowing in a lot of light.

The good things - the coffee machine had decent coffee provided, green tea and nice toiletries in the bathroom. The area had some nice restaurants and noodle bars which were good for evening meals. Sensible priced self parking ($18 a day) available in the main Japantown car park.

The bad things - I didn't get any of the Joie de Vivre member benefits, the main hotel areas were stuffy. The room looked tired with the woven wall paper in the toilet annex fraying at the skirting boards.

Room Tip: Not 410 - noise from fans, near service elevator and ice machine.

Went to SFO for a concert and stayed for one night only at the Hotel Kabuki. The greeting upon arrival at the door and the Front Desk were very warm and welcoming.

Arrived before check-in and room was not ready but they took my cell number and called at the moment it was ready...no need to be hanging around the lobby waiting.

I did not eat or drink in any of the F&B outlets since there are plenty of options around the hotel itself.

The room itself is very basic and could do for a complete renovation. The shower and deep tub area was the highpoint of the bathroom area...everything is functional but no WOW factor.

There are more than likely better options at equal or lesser cost.

We stayed there in the middle of our week in the Bay area in a supposedly upgraded room, I would not want to see the standard rooms. It was in a wing in the back, separate building from the main one. The decor was 80's at best, thing were run down, some of the restroom fixtures seemed like they were from the 70's mis-matched and ill fitting, not a $200 plus a night hotel. We were going to stay 2 nights but were out of there by 8:30 in the morning, We have stayed at other Joie de Vivre hotels in the past, this will make me re-think using them in the future.

Just returned from california. had a four night stay at the kabuki which didn't impress me. The room backed onto a road and was very noisy as their was no double glazing. The wireless stopped working twice which was blamed on heavy usage as the hotel is used a lot for business conventions. The location was poor and too far from the main attractions however this made us hire bicycles which we kept for three days and saw way more of the city so turned out to be ok for us. I made two local calls which were in effect free phone numbers and was charged $18. Each call was for no more than two to three minutes. When I complained it was removed without question which was good but I felt they were trying it on. The staff were friendly and no complaints there as was the concierge. Think the hotel is more geared for business users than holiday makers. Apart from the small trees in the yard area I didn't think it felt japanese in any way

Room Tip: make sure you state a room away from the back road

This hotel is in Japantown and is connected to a Japanese mall.
The front desk was quite friendly and I requested to be moved due to the noise of the traffic below my room, they prompty switched my room with no problems.
The room was adequate, clean, and had a nice view looking up a hill towards the city. The lobby and some rooms have a lovely garden view. This would be my preference.
There are rooms which have saunas and deep soaking tubs as well.
The restaurant was surprisingly good.
It's also fun to visit the Japanese mall that is connected.
I recommend that you not have a room on the main road, as it can be quite noisy even though it is a quiet part of town.
