“Charming and Cosy, Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2011

We stayed at Petite Auberge for four nights for a sightseeing stopover in San Francisco based on the recommendations from this site and we weren't disappointed. Its true that some might prefer modern hotels with crisp and sleek decor where you don't meet other guests, so if that's you then this place might not be the best - but if you're wanting a small quaint place to spend a bit more time, you'll enjoy it here.

The room was very clean and on the whole functional, although the TV was inside a cabinet and couldn't really be moved to a good place for watching it. The decor is very floral and colourful - fun for a hotel room but definitely not what I'd want at home. The teddy bear on the bed is a nice touch too. The fireplace is great for ambience if you have one, although because it has to be turned off when asleep, we got a little cold at night (it was unusually cold in SF with highs 40-50F).

Breakfast (included in price) had a good selection of pastry, cereal, toast, etc, and the hors d'oeuvres and wine in the evenings were nice too, and substantial enough that if you don't feel like going out for dinner you can get by, if you don't mind listening to the same playlist of Parisian music every day. Its also a great place to chat with other travelers to get ideas of what to see and where to eat in town.

Location is superb - only a 5 -10 min walk from the Powell St BART station and Market St, and a nice walk into Fisherman's wharf (40 min) for the day. The only slight frustration was that it seemed no one was ever at the front desk, apart from the very middle of the day. It wasn't really a problem though because the White Swan (owned by the same group) two doors down always has a person who is willing to help.

All in all, a wonderful place and highly recommended for those who like a homely touch to their stay.

Arriving into SFO Airport we took the BART train to the Powell St. station. We then hopped a cab to take us to the Petit Auberge. Upon first sight the hotel looked great and fit the part of a French inn. We checked in at the neighboring sister hotel and made our way to our room. The old style elevator was a surprise to us and added to the appeal. We were upgraded to a room with a fireplace that we were thankful for on a couple of the days after being out in the wind. The room was clean and cozy. Walking around the room we noticed the creaky floors. Later that night our neighbors on the floor above were walking around and we heard every step. Breakfast was spot on, sausage, quiche, fruit, breakfast breads, eggs and plenty of good coffee. One benefit we thought that wasn't that big of a deal that turned out to be a really big deal was the free sodas and water in the fridge. We really came to appreciate this. Overall this hotel was a great value for us and a nice retreat.

After staying in some of the larger hotels in San Francisco on various business trips over the years, including Hotel Monaco, Fairmont Nob Hill and Hotel Nikko (all of which were excellent in their own right) I went for ``boutique'' this time around and was pleasantly surprised. Petite Auberge has many quirky aspects to it, all of which I enjoyed. For example, you need a key to open the front door. That's different. The elevator has those cool grated doors that you slide open before entering or exiting. You can always sneak down to a cooler near the kitchen and grab a Coke, free. If you're looking for a grand lobby, this place is not for you. There pretty much isn't a lobby and most of the time I was there, there didn't seem to be anybody at the front desk. So, if you're looking for a super-attentive concierge service, this isn't your place. But it has a wonderful homey kind of vibe that grows on you.
I'm not a big breakfast guy, but where else can you get quiche, sausages, baked French toast, amazing little pastries, a do-it-yourself oatmeal station with fruit and nuts and grains and stuff, great coffee, a toaster, jams and jellies.
The breakfast room in the lower level is homey and small, so everybody is friendly and makes conversion, which is a great way to get tips on where to do and what to do. One couple that I met had been coming to Petite Auberge every year for 25 years, It's that kind of place. There's an afternoon wine and cheese reception in a small living room area, which also has the same friendly feel.
The room was relatively small, but comfortable. Everything worked. Free Internet.
Again, if you're looking for a USA Today under your door every morning and a gift shop and room service meals, this is not your place. But, hey, you're in San Franciso, where everything is just outside your doorstep.
Petite Auberge is a great sanctuary and an alternative to the Hiltons of the world.

Small and cosy hotel, we both loved the quiet and easy going style. Excellent breakfast and very good afternoon hors d'oevre (hope that is spelled correctly...). Close to Market Street and the cable car, very well positioned. Accomodating and nice staff.

Great location for walking the City. Very generous and delicious breakfasts included. The staff, especially Andy, were pleasant and responsive. We stayed in room #31 overlooking Bush street. The room has a king bed, fireplace and a windowseat, very romantic. Bathroom is small be adequate.

Stayed here for just one night in December. Very good location, nice front desk man, easy check in. Room was small but very cosy, clean and the bed was comfy. However we were in a room next to the lift and this could be quite noisy with people in and out. Also the bathroom fan was unbelievable noisy and the room next door left theirs on when they checked out early. I've slept through city traffic with windows open before, but with the lift, bathroom fan and wheelie cases going up and down the hall it was and early wake up call. That said I would stay here again as the good points outweigh the noise.

I have stayed in the PA once before, as well as its sister Inn, the Black Swan. This is a place that keeps me coming back for the price. The people that work there are really helpful. Andy, one of the assistant managers, provided a lot of useful information and was very helpful to us when we checked in. He gave us advice on avoiding parking tickets in the restricted zones near the hotel and told us where to save $$ on parking. He helped us to find a room we liked.

We appreciate the very nice breakfast experience at PA, that makes a relaxing and nutritious start to the day. Quiche, croissants, wonderful bread, great coffee, fresh fruit, etc. etc. The chef, Joel, did a great job every day. The eating area at PA is a bit small, but if you want more room (when there are a lot of people at breakfast) you can pop over next door and have breakfast at the Black Swan.

In general, PA is the smaller hotel of the two places, and I think the rooms in PA are smaller than at the Black Swan. Get a room with a fireplace. A little more $ but more room. We were there in January and the fireplace added to the ambience.

I like the location of the PA, but you have to do hills to get around from the hotel. This is SF after all! But its near Union Square, Nob Hill, Chinatown, Financial District. We used ZipCar during our stay and there were three or four sites within a couple blocks.

My wife and I like the cozy charm of this French-themed boutique hotel (although I can do without the piped in Edith Piaf type of music in the common areas). It has a homey feel. If you are into the upscale hotel experience, this is not your thing. But PA has sufficiently good infrastructure and friendly helpful staff to create a comfort zone for new visitors and returnees like us. The additional amenities, free local paper, fresh baked cookies every day, wine and appetizers each night, are icing on the cake because they pull off the rest of the hotel experience well.
