“Grand Hotel & Pleasant Memories”
Reviewed 12 August 2011

I stayed at the Mark Hopkins in the early '60's and found it to be as elegant and luxurious now as it was then. The bellmen and reception desk personnel were extremely courteous and efficient. We were initially assigned to a room on the 5th floor. After complaining of rowdy late-night party types laughing and shouting out loud in the adjacent room, we happily received an upgrade to a quiet room on the 14th floor. Sadly, the guests staying the the "Mark" (also observed at the nearby Fairmont and Ritz-Carlton) now "dress down" to t-shirts, shorts, dirty looking, frayed jeans with holes, base ball caps (worn backwards of course) and one inebriated guest observed with beer bottle in-hand as he descended the elevator to the ornate lobby. I suppose this is a trade-off from those earlier years of heavy smoking, discrimination, and only the affluent being able to lodge at these beautiful grand old palaces. I still miss the elegance of gentlemen in suits and ladies in fashionable dresses with corresponding manners, the soothing piano of Frankie Carle at the "Top of the Mark" and civility of the cocktail lounge patrons. Alas, those times are forever gone. I thank the Mark Hopkins for retaining it's elegance and charm.

Stayed for six nights, July 31-August 6. Reserved one room as part of a vacation package. This was the hotel that I wanted as part of a getaway trip, and I wanted something more luxurious than a regular chain hotel.

The Nob Hill address is quite confusing as the hotel entrance faces the intersection of California and Mason. Once you find it, the initial view of the hotel is spectacular with its towering presence and the red carpet leading to the grand lobby. There is even a small museum in a lobby wing and downstairs showcasing the history of the hotel.

As other reviewers have stated, the front desk staff can be hit-or-miss. The person checking us in was initially confused by our package voucher and thought that we were staying for one night instead of six. However, that was quickly resolved. We often consulted with the concierge next to the front desk with transportation questions, and they generally had to consult the Internet to answer them. The most consistent feature of the front desk was the tray of free apples available to all guests.

I had hoped for a more spectacular view than the one we received in our king room (307). We had a nice view of the lobby roof but past that, we could see downtown and the spinning Macy's star. There were plenty of amenities in the room including a comfortable chair and ottoman, desk, coffee stand, standard TV and bar fridge. The bathroom had a small tub, but we enjoyed the bathroom and slippers provided in the closet that also contained a safe and an umbrella.

Adding to the comfort of the stay was the superb housekeeping staff. Having such a long stay, we had plenty of items with us. Following the first morning, the housekeeper neatly arranged our toiletries in a row atop a towel, placed our food in a tidy corner on the desk and left us a kind note to thank us for our tip. We received a thank you note from each day's housekeeper, which was a nice gesture that we got to see after sightseeing.

The gym in the basement level was first class as well. In the large room were three treadmills, an elliptical machine, a vertical bicycle, a reclining bicycle, two exercise balls, a weight machine and free weights. Also in the gym was a hot and cold water machine that we used quite frequently.

Across from the gym is a business center with pay Internet access. All Internet access in the hotel (including wireless) has a fee, so I opted to check my e-mail at the Apple Store on Stockton Street. However, we were able to use the Internet computer in the lobby to check-in to our flight and print our boarding passes for free.

We did not visit the Top of the Mark restaurant, but we did go there to see the view. The restaurant is indeed grand, but we were satisfied by going upstairs and taking pictures of the city view from the entrance's windows.

The best thing about the hotel is its location. It is on top of Nob Hill, making a return trip to the hotel quite an exercise. However, all three cable car lines run within a block of the front entrance. Since we were staying for a week, we each purchased a 7-day Muni passport for $27 and avoided paying the $6 fee each time we boarded the cable car.

I would definitely consider the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins for my next trip to San Francisco. When I am travelling, I want a memorable experience, and the hotel definitely contributed to that on this trip.

Stayed here for the SF Marathon. Never again. The rooms are decent; nothing spectacular and not what I really expected from an Intercontinental. But they were okay. They were very clean and very basic.

As an Ambassador member, I asked for an upgrade and was told that was impossible. Staff seemed overwhelmed, and with one male exception, was snotty and full of themselves.

Waste of money.

Pros:
Very good location
Beautiful views

Cons:
Snotty staff
No upgrades
Expensive

We decided to stay here due to Alfred Hitchcock and his movies. The Hotel has a history and you can see it in many movies from the mid 1900.

The location is excellent, you can walk to Union Square or Fishermans warf if you like, and the view from the room is excellent. However the hotel is very old and in need fora refurbishment, and the rooms very very small.

I would not stay here again, and if it had not been for Mr. Hitchcock I would not have stayed here in the first place either.

Rooms were very clean. Staff was a little stuffy and the valet took their time getting your car if you didn't tip them nicely which is crap because they already charge you an arm and a leg to park as it is. Cable car stop right out front of hotel, so if you don't need a car that is a nice option to have. You also can walk to many restuarants and attractions if you have good walking shoes and can handle the hills.
Expected to hear a lot of traffic noise, but we were on the 14th floor and it was very quiet.

This hotel is a classic, such lovely attention to detail in the lobby, rooms and common areas. I was shocked & pleasantly surprised to snag the MH on priceline. I've frequented the Top of the Mark, but had never stayed in a room.

Check in was quick, friendly and professional. The room was small, but adequate. It was very clean and felt luxurious. Keep in mind, this is a classic hotel & the decor reflects as such. The bed is one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in. It was very quiet & peaceful and we had a wonderful nights sleep. The housekeeping staff were very sweet & friendly.

The fitness room is very small/cramped but it does the trick! A few treadmills & ellipticals, a set of free weights, 2 balls & a few nautilus machines.

The elevators are tiny, and there are only 3 of them, so be prepared to wait during peak hours. TOTM is a lot of fun. The drinks aren't of any particular greatness and are certainly not worth their $13 price tag, but the ambiance and view makes up for it and more :). Put on a fancy outfit and enjoy your evening!

Room Tip: The higher up the better, but all rooms have an excellent view from atop Nob Hill!
