We stayed here 3 nights. Great suite with lots of room rarely found in today's hotels. Great to experience traditions from earlier times. Lobbey service set the standard, and this carried through to the restaurant. Only marked location down because of distance from downtown, on tram route but these were often very crowded. Nevertheless position in Nob Hill has other advantages. Would come back again.

I stayed here Friday and Saturday 23-24 August 2013. My room was unacceptable. For this category of property everything should be shipshape but failed miserably. I was assigned room 701. Most of the springs in the mattress were worn out. The minibar refrigerator was totally empty and was disconnected. As for the spa? Both the oblong pool and whirlpool water were dirty. I believe this was due to poor design more than anything since attendants were constantly having to mop overflow back into the pool. Foot traffic just made dirty puddles which were then simply mopped back into the pool. Outrageous! For the $$$ / value you will certainly fare better elsewhere.

Room Tip: Don't even bother! A total let down.

Dear Swissdiner,

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us regarding your recent visit to the Huntington Hotel. We're very sorry to hear that you found your stay to be unacceptable -- that is certainly never the feeling we want our guests to leave the hotel with.

Your concerns about Room 701 and the pool and whirlpool in the spa are being addressed with the appropriate departments for immediate attention.

Although we did disappoint you during this visit, and you've mentioned that you'll never return, we do hope that you'll reconsider when your travels bring you to San Francisco in the future.

Wishing you all the very best in your travels...

Sincerely,

Kellie

We recently started our American trip in San Francisco and after careful searching with the help of American Express Travel Platinum Service decided on The Huntington Hotel.
We arrived and greeted by friendly staff, not as big a reception area as I expected but service was good. Both our rooms were upgraded which was due to being on The American Express programme. Our Suite was very big, clean comfortable. The views not the greatest but from our other room views better.
The bar was busy and where a lot of locals come as the consider it one of the best bars in town. The restaurant was very decent food and lovely maitre d.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room, although all may be refurbished by now. Or a bathroom with 2 sinks.

We were really looking forward to staying at this place as a culmination to our West coast trip and it was a major let down! The doorman named Jason was friendly and helpful when we pulled up at the hotel before dropping our rental car off. Our luggage was swiftly taken and we were checked in pretty quickly even though it was slightly before their check-in time. We were informed by the front desk upon check-in that the hotel restaurant was out of action due to a leak and that breakfast would be served in one of the conference rooms and that the problem should be rectified in the next two days. We dropped our luggage off at the room and straight away noticed how tired it was...the bathroom was a throwback from the 60s and all the doors were old and paint on them thick and yellowing...There was also, bizarrely, a 60s kitchen in the suite with no cutlery, teak kettle cups or glasses in it, complete with a big fridge and a hob...air con was also dated and pretty noisy. We called reception that evening when we came back from sightseeing to say that the room wasn't as luxurious as we expected it to be; after all, we booked a junior suite and were told that we were upgraded to a better room anyway and that they couldn't change the rooms that night and would see what they can do the next day - we heard nothing...Taking into account that the restaurant was out of action the complimentary continental breakfast was pretty lame...a plate of fruit, some croissants and plate of cheese and ham, all the guests looked just as unimpressed as us. They did allow people to take the food away, which was a bonus as otherwise you were sitting at the round tables sitting 10 in a small room. Waiting staff at breakfast were friendly and polite and so were the housekeeping staff. We saw a lot of them every day as the staff elevator was being updated too. We had spa treatments in the hotel spa which was clean but pretty small and saunas and steam rooms are located separately in men and women's changing areas. Pool is small and smelt of chlorine too much so we didn't go in...on the other hand staff in the spa were nice and treatments pretty good.
We found out that the hotel was an apartment block before, so guess that explains the kitchen in the room we stayed in; looks like they simply didn't bother taking it out when it became a hotel. All in all a hotel with great potential if it gets updated!
On the plus side, the location of the hotel is good with cable cart running right outside the door, Union square shops are 20min walk away and the Ferry building market is just at the end of the cable cart tracks and is a great place to grab some lunch.

Dear Sonnite,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. I'm sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations -- we never like to hear that from our guests, of course. While I'm happy that you were impressed with our staff, including Jason at the door, the wait staff, spa staff, and housekeeping staff, it didn't add up to a great stay for you since the room was unsatisfactory. We greatly apologize for the inconvenience of taking your breakfast in one of our conference rooms during the leak we experienced in our restaurant. I'm happy to inform you that we are preparing to undergo a renovation of the hotel soon, and I'm confident that should you give us a second chance upon a future visit to San Francisco, we would make a stronger and more positive impression upon you.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your honest thoughts with us. Wishing you safe and happy future travels...

Sincerely,
Kellie

Had high hopes for our 4 night stay at the Huntington. Upon arrival, the doorman was friendly and helpful in getting us into the hotel, off a busy and crazy street. Unfortunately, that was our best service during this stay.

Reception was frosty and overly swift. No welcome, no offer of an upgrade (which I would have paid for), no explanation of hotel amenities, and certainly no warmth. Perhaps it's because our booking was pre-paid, but I've never had a luxury hotel be so cold upon my arrival. This sets a bad tone from the start.

Our room was a standard king, on a middle floor. It was not overly large, but had enough space for us and our stuff. Carpet was in need of cleaning and repair, baseboards and walls and doors were nicked and rough looking. Bathroom was spacious and clean, but needed some more space to place our things. We were surprised and disappointed to have no in-room coffeemaker. This meant we had to leave the hotel to get a cup of java every time.

The hotel bar/restaurant was dark and clearly popular. It was also very pricey.

We never did find the spa, pool, or gym. The concierge service was so frosty and slow that we made our own arrangements. We witnessed the same frosty service being given to other guests. Surprising, again, as you wonder why they bother having a concierge.

Cleaning and maintenance staff and the doormen were friendly and professional. While we found the doormen often missing just as we arrived with hands full of coffee or shopping bags, they were always gracious and friendly and helpful when they were present. Can't blame them for being overworked!

All in all, I suppose some people have loved this hotel. I found it frosty and pompous. Too bad, as we'd have happily returned. Maybe when they invest in some freshening up of rooms and some customer service training?

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors, as street noise can be a bit much given location. Ask for town car service within the 2 mile hotel radius -- it can be handy.

Dear McMarshal,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. I'm very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the service you received. It's unusual to hear that our staff failed to meet expectations, and we're in the process of addressing the specific service issues you mentioned in your review with our staff.

You absolutely should have received a warm welcome from the front desk staff upon check-in, along with a full description of the hotel's amenities, including the spa, pool and gym. You're right in stating that a warm reception sets the tone for a stay, and we didn't get your visit off on the right track. I am sincerely sorry about that, as well as for the condition of the room -- the nicks and scrapes you mentioned.

I'm happy that you found a bright spot in your stay to be our housekeeping and door staff. They certainly are an invaluable asset to the hotel, and we're very aware of the impact their dedication to their jobs has on our guests.

We'd like to share with you that we will be undergoing a renovation of the hotel soon, and we hope that the next time your travels bring you to San Francisco, that you'll give us another chance to improve your impression of us. We would love to change your mind and make you a fan of the Huntington Hotel in the future.

Thank you again for sharing your honest feedback via TripAdvisor. We wish you happy and safe travels.

Best Wishes,

Kellie
