Good Location
The Chancellor Hotel was very good for our 3 day stay in San Francisco in July- it's right on the Powell-Mason/Hyde cable car line and a 30 second walk to all that Union Square has to offer.

Staff were friendly and helped with directions and giving us a wide selection of pillows for our room (for no extra charge).

The room was comfortable and the bed was more than satisfactory for our stay. The view of a brick wall and a fire escape was not ideal, but we were not bothered by this because we knew we would be spending most of our time exploring the city.

The plumbing between the rooms was quite noisy at times and did wake us up once or twice when people in other rooms flushed the toilet.

Overall, a very nice and comfortable stay in a great location, though I would suggest taking earplugs!

This is a reliable Union Square 3 Star Hotel. Room was comfortable and clean. Typical San Francisco August daytime temperature was in the upper 60's - no A/C needed. Cieling fan in the room was sufficient to keep cool with the window closed. This is also a typical Union Square Hotel - caters to tourists, building is probably near 100 years old. Room was nicely updated. Wireless internet was fast and reliable. Open the window and get a breeze and clang of the cable cars, hum of the cable (it passes right out front) and typical street noise. Closed the window and it was quiet enough.

My first choice was Embarcadero to be away from Union Square, but I wasn't getting anywhere on priceline, so I went to Union Square and got a good deal. I knew what Union Square is - busy, noisy, tourist location. There are quieter options, such as Embarcadero or Nob Hill. Best Union Square attraction is the Marrakech Magic Theater, home of Peter Morrison, Magician. His show makes a great evening.

We arrived around 11:00 in the morning. A room was ready. Decent room too. If not, of course they would have stored our bags.

This hotel is an easy walk from the BART station at Powell and Market for airport transportation. For around town, get a Muni passport - we got the three day. A couple of rides on the cable cars and a few on buses or Market St trollies quickly pays for it. Just be sure to get a good Muni system map or bring reading glasses/magnifying glass or a young person to read the routes on the tourist maps.

Room Tip: As usual, a room higher up, or on the back side would be quieter.

If square footage matters to you, then the Chancellor might not be your first choice. But if you are looking for a clean, comfortable room close to many attractions and transportation at an excellent rate then there is only one choice. From check-in to check-out the folks at the Chancellor were great. The room is modest in size, but really all you do is sleep, and queen beds are pretty much the same size no matter where you go.

One simple thing they have are great windows. With them closed they block almost all street noise, the only noise that got through was heavy street grinding that was happening down the block. We might not have even noticed it, but we enjoyed leaving the window open at night (for safety it only opens a little) and listening to the sounds of San Francisco as we went to be each night.

This is a great place to stay if you want a good value close to everything, but not if you are after a cookie cutter room (for twice the price) of the big chains.

location location location. This place is cute clean and in a perfect location. we had breakfast next door at sears. In the evening we could hear the sax player - play us to sleep. request a high room. this is an old city so no AC -- you need windows open in the heat of summer - and at night you can hear the garbage trucks come. Im not a light sleeper but others are. I loved being here. We took the BRAT from airport (8 dollars) walked to hotel and when my son wanted to visted Haight Abbey - we took the bus for 2.75 -- then on the same ticket went to the Wharf for our bike rentals to go over the SF BAY BRIDGE - so cool. I would def stay here again - as long as you dont have a lot of folks in your party. to bring my family of 6 I would probably have to find another place - but for a few folks this is def the place I would come back too -- and again for the price - when you compare -- its so worth it!

Room Tip: higher the better

Chancellor Hotel is located almost in front at the Union Square of San Francisco. The location is unbelievably nice and really pratical! It is in Powell Street, where you wiil be able to catch the Cable Car (stop just in front of the hotel) or walk towards the Chinese district located not so far from it.

For the period when I went, it was the cheapest in that area, no way to reach that rate for the hotel in the surroundings.

Breakfast is in the average, cleaness as well.

The room is not very big, let's say quite enough for a 1 person stay. Bathroom a bit small but you got everything inside.

In conclusion Chancellor Hotel is really fine, nice, confortable and with a VERY good location and price (for business).

The only very bad thing to be highlighted is that its value is stained by a mediocre and very poor kindness, hospitality and professionalism from the people who are working there, reception workers first. This is a very important point on which to work to make this Hotel a very high rated and competitive solution overall!

Spent three nights in San Francisco at the Chancellor in early July. My friend and I shared a room with two beds on the 7th floor and had a great time there. It's the perfect location in Union Square, and cousins who live there advised the rate was an amazing deal for the area. The hotel has lots of character, and is quite well-kept. The beds were super comfortable, and as I was just getting over a cold that was a major advantage. It was so nice to be able to have the window open, which is unusual in North American hotels. The room was kept very clean, and I have no complaints about any part of our stay, but the last night my friend discovered a giant cockroach in the bathroom - just part of life in California, I'm sure. We had a minor freak-out and called the front desk, who immediately sent someone up to dispatch it for us. We felt a bit silly, and were very grateful for the speedy assistance.
If you're looking for a hotel with a bit of personality in a fantastic location and great service, I would highly recommend the Chancellor.

Beyond the cost/value benefit, the Chancellor has the friendliest front desk anywhere! The restaurant is often overlooked despite its superior quality, wonderful service, and competitive prices. Each day they have a true special to provide food diversity. The bathrooms are quite small but adequate and the walkin closets are surely a plus. I believe it is the best hotel value in San Francisco. Check out their packages which combine the necessities like parking or food.

Room Tip: We request a room in rear of hotel to avoid the noisy charming clanging cable cars. We go higher fl...
