“Location plus staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2013

As touted elsewhere, this hotel's location is its best asset: nearly across from Union Square & near all that shopping, public transit in any direction, Walgreen's on the corner. The room is typically downtown San Francisco small, but quite comfortable, with great beds [a bit high for us shorter folks - ditto the "tall" bathtub] and lots of drawer space & a refrig! Tour desk in lobby, so helpful information immediately at hand. Staff were friendly and informative. Hotel's restaurant for breakfast was excellent, so I skipped the wait line for Sears' "next door". And coffee & tea water always available; gratis cookies sometimes ran out. Overall a great place for staying in downtown San Francisco.

Free Wifi, great location, free tea and coffee at the lobby. Room is clean, staff is spot on. Beware that the room is NY-size (means its small relative to what anyone would expect). But with such good location, there is really nothing to complain about.

Room Tip: If you want sleep, go higher floor or choose a room that doesn't face the main street.

The water pressure from the shower head Is super light! Wish it wasn't so. This is the only negative issue I have with the Chancellor Hotel. Otherwise (our very first time here), everything else was great with the hotel. Great location, clean rooms, very friendly and accommodating staff. The bathrooms are small (tub, sink and toilet right up against each other). So if you like space in your bathroom, this hotel is not for you. We had a room on the 12th flloor which faced Powell Street, and I loved that the window could be opened for fresh air. When the window was closed, you could not hear a peep of city sounds to disturb your sleep. Not having A/C in the room is okay for me as I would rather have the fresh San Fransisco air blow into the room. Coffee and tea is provided In the mornings and afternoons by the hotel bar and yummy cookies are set out daily as well. Nice touch!

I am very glad these folks liked the hotel and had a good stay except for the water pressure. We will look into the rooms on the 12th floor, but sometimes the water pressure can be weak because the shower head is blocked with sediment - a simple fix. However, in a historic hotel, some rooms are better than others and a high volume of usage at the same time can be a factor.

Location is great and the price was reasonable.

No air-condition in the room.

You get 10% discount for breakfast, but you can find cheaper options outside the hotel.

No coffee in the room, but you can have it for free in the lobby, as well as cookies and apples.

WiFi was available in the room, signal was fair. The WiFi login screen is a bit annoying (especially on mobile device).

Very interesting review - Almost the exact same words as 2 years ago - BUT, we moved up a notch in the overall rating so that is good.

If he/she comes back again in two more years, we will still be in a great location and have a reasonable price; we will not have air conditioning; we'll probably still give out a 10% off coupon even though there are cheaper options outside the hotel; we won't have coffee in the room, but it will be in the lobby with the cookies and apples (we did upgrade the coffee service this year): and the Wi-Fi will still only be fair despite our upgrades. Thus, he/she will be able to post the same thing again then as well. Other than the Wi-Fi comments, I can't argue with any of the comments past, present of future.

I have made the Chancellor my home in San Francisco for many business trips over the years. The location cannot be beat if you want to be in the heart of downtown and easy access to shopping and many attractions. The staff is very friendly and the rooms clean and well supplied with amenities for a multiple night stay. Did I mention that the cable car may be boarded just a few steps from the lobby?

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper or need less of the noise of busy Powell street ask for a room away from...

We stayed here for a few nights after a conference. The rooms were smallish, but there was a small sitting area, the room was well decorated and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The closet was very large and it was great having that extra room to stow our suitcases. Staff was friendly. We had a complimentary bottle of wine in our room and there were free cookies and coffee in the lobby. Would love to stay here again!

We first stayed in the Chancellor in May 2012 so when it came to booking our Honeymoon in the states this year we had no hesitation in choosing this hotel again. We were made to feel really welcome by the girl on reception and were efficiently checked in to our room on the 11th floor. On entering the room we found chocolates and bubbly waiting for us which was a really nice touch. We love this hotel for the service and location, neither of which can be beaten in the area, we believe. I can't believe some of the negative reviews regarding the room sizes and the noise levels. Yes, the rooms are small but they are well appointed and have everything you would need - telly, fridge, free wifi, choice of pillows, sweeties. We never wanted for anything but I'm sure if we did we would have been accommodated. We also love the 'noise' coming from outside. The bells from the cable cars and the musicians on the square provide great atmosphere and I always opened the window to hear them better. It was great being able to go downstairs each morning to get my coffee and cookies. Took less than 5 minutes to do that. There are loads of good local eateries around and we were given great recommendations from the barman. Union square is a great area to hang around at night but transport is good if you fancy going further afield. We enjoyed getting the cable car (or walking) to North Beach and there are bus and tram stops close by too. I could go on but I guess a lot has been said before. Users of tripadvisor have no excuse if they don't like what they find here. It's a 3 star hotel with small rooms, great service, everything you need and in a fantastic location. I don't think we'd ever choose anywhere else.

Room Tip: Get a high floor facing Union Square
