“In the heart of San Francisco”

This is a great old hotel in a super location--Union Square. We arrived at the SF airport and took the BART to within a few blocks of the hotel. You are within walking distance of many sites, and the cable car, trolley and bus lines can take you everywhere else. We enjoyed the cozy bar at happy hour (the bartender is very helpful about where to eat and what not to miss); breakfast service was quick and the food was good. There is 24-hour coffee and tea service in the lobby. The front desk staff were very pleasant and helpful as was the tour desk operator.
Although the room was not big, it was adequate with bed and two easy chairs, mini fridge, and a very large walk-in closet so you can stow your clothes and suitcases. The housekeeping service is to be commended for keeping the room and bathrooms sparkling clean.
We would book the Chancellor again when returning to SF.

Room Tip: Although you'll hear some street noise and cable cars, ask for the top floor room facing Union S...

This hotel is in an absolutely fantastic location. Easy walking distance to many shops and restaurants. I used the cable car a lot as it stops just outside the hotel (get a muni passport for this).

My room was on the 8th floor at the back corner of the hotel so was quite quiet. The room was very comfortable (get a corner room so you have extra storage for your luggage). I ened up using the extra heater provided in the room and it worked great (I found San Francisco quite cold). I also took advantage of the pillow menu and was very happy to be able to sleep on a buckwheat pillow, which is what I use at home.

I only had one breadfast at the restaurant, but the food was good and the service excellent. Front desk staff were always very friendly.

The only negative (and it's small) was that whenever I needed the tour desk, the guy running it was always on a break and the front desk staff won't help in his absense. I spent a bit of time waiting for him to get back from his breaks.

Overall this is a great hotel and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room, to get a walk in closet.

Excellent location. Right at the heart of everything yet vert quiet.

The little extra comforts:

Pillow menu: you can choose 2 complimentary pillows from a list of various pillows. I had a sore neck from pillows in an LA hotel and the pillows I ordered at Chancellor were perfect. I slept the whole night through with no pain.

Lobby area complimentary items:
Coffee, tea, popcorn and cookies. Great to have these options and to have tea and a biscuit while wait for friends in the lobby.

I will definetely be staying here when I return to San Francisco.

We enjoyed our stay at The Chancellor whilst on our honeymoon. It was nice to have the hotel acknowledge this with a bottle of sparkling and chocolates! We were in the U.S for 5 weeks and this hotel was one of two that recognised it was a special trip! Location was ok but it depends what you want to see. There are shops around union square, but if you want to do Alcatraz (and other things around Fishermans Wharf) it will take nearly half hour to walk. Probably 20 min walk to the baseball at AT & T Park. Room was small and we had to strategically stack our big suitcases but we expected this from what we had read about the older hotels in the area. Bathroom pretty tiny, could just close the door around the toilet. Wasn't too bad for 3 nights. However we went in September and it wasn't at all hot but it was humid and you can only open the window a fraction and the fan doesn't kill the humidity. So we were pretty hot in the room. We thought no air con wouldn't be a problem but not being able to aerate the room proved uncomfortable. The coffee and cookies are cute and good when you want a quick snack. We didn't stay out late in this area as we didn't feel it was too safe but that's a personal thing.

This was my second time in San Francisco and I have to say that the Chancellor Hotel is definitely the best deal in the city.
The hotel is perfectly located in front of Union Square and from a walking distance (5 minutes down Powell Street) from BART station. Lots of restaurants and stores are close too and there's a cable car stop just crossing the street.
Hotel amenities are excellent, complimentary wi-fi works perfectly and the front desk is always available to help with indications, tips, tours or car rental. The rooms are nice, not too big, but you're not going to San Francisco to stay inside your room, right? I saw some reviews complaining about noise from the street, but this is not my case. My room (#1005) was really good and silent. If you want to stay in SF downtown for a reasonable price and are looking for quality services, Chancellor is the place.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor for a silent room. I stayed on the 10th floor and have no complaints.

This was a nice hotel, perfectly located for walking around and catching public transportation. The restaurant was wonderful for breakfast, the bar was cozy for an evening drink, the apples and cookies were a nice touch too.

The Chancellor Hotel was a great place to stay for us.
The staff were great and looked after us well!
It is in a great location, so close to bars and restaurants and right in front of the cable cars.
It is a older hotel with no air conditioning which is fine I am sure most of the time and it was fine while we were there. The rooms have a ceiling fan and heating.
It is an older hotel but has been well looked after and the rooms are clean.
I can highly recommend the Chancellor Hotel
