“Great location and clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

The Chancellor Hotel is located in the Union Square neighbourhood, which means guests are close to a shopping district that includes a convenient Walgreens, and a few blocks from the start/end point of the cable car. This is useful since lining up for the cable car at 7am is the best way to avoid the massive line up of tourists that form all day.

Initially, I was not impressed with our room. Our window faced the main street where the cable cars run, so ear plugs were provided in our room. The ear plugs also proved useful for blocking out the sounds of the TV next door. The room itself was quite small, and obviously still had the original plaster walls.

However, the hotel grew on me. The room was clean, as was the bed, which was comfortable. There was an empty mini fridge where we could store food we had bought from the Walgreens. I enjoyed the pillow menu, in which you can order special pillows like a down or buckwheat pillow, at no extra cost. There were plenty of electrical outlets and USB ports to charge up electronic devices at the desk. Also, they provided complimentary cookies and fruit flavoured water in the lobby.

This hotel is lower priced than others in the neighbourhood, so though their small rooms may look a little run down, they make the effort where it counts, and the result is a comfortable and well-located place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard on the lower floors will essentially have a view of three walls and very...

This is a lovely little hotel with lots if charm.
The staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are delightful. Location is excellent
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the towels are a little small but apart from that it is lovely.

I wish you would have said something about the towels. I would have run over to Macy*s and bought the biggest towels they have for that 5th dot!

After arriving at almost 1AM after many plane delays, I was delighted to be welcomed by my first name at the front desk. They were very helpful with check in, providing maps of the area (which who needs with smartphones) and answering any questions we had. I reserved a standard room which was a little small, but not too bad providing we weren't planning on staying in the room much, it was only for sleeping. The room was clean, and well appointed with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom also was small, but manageable. Being that I thought this was the best value on Union Square (1/2 other hotel prices) I could make due. Due to business meeting and wanting to enjoy Union Square, I asked for a late check out, which they granted (2PM) If I ever return to San Francisco, I will be staying here again, it was excellent for the price, location, etc.

I booked this hotel with a little apprehension as it had no A/C, but it was cool in San Francisco and it was all good. it's been decades since I've slept with a window open. it could be a little noisy to some, even on the 15th floor where I was. The room was roomy and had very nice appointments. The bathroom was average, but easily usable with a full bathtub. Haven't seen one of them in ages. It was just off Union Square a great location to explore from. The hop on and off bus has two stops right near it. The lobby could you a little love with new furniture, but the staff and people were all friendly and helpful. they even sent a person to make sure I was up for my wakeup call since my phone had been knocked off the receiver and went to voice mail. that was very much appreciated so I didn't miss my flight. They were celebrating their 100 Anniversary and had a huge party in the lobby. It was nice to be part of that! I would stay again, with an eye to warmth of the weather, but lovely to stay in.

Room Tip: Try for higher room, if you sleep with the windows open as the hotel has no A/C and it can be noisy.

I wanted an 'old world hotel' experience in San Francisco without sacrificing some modern amenities, and Chancellor Hotel fit the bill. Room was an adequate size with flat screen TV, an in-room safe and mini fridge. The bathroom was smaller but functional and the shower had great water pressure. The bed was so comfy - the bedding, mattress and pillows - slept great! My only concern was that the room was a bit 'stuffy' which was managed by opening the windows and running the ceiling fan at high speed. Super location and great service by all the staff - would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor on the back side. If you want more of a view, you'll want the...

The hotel is in a convenient location at Union Square, serving as a great base to use public transportation to see the sights of San Francisco. No complaints about the room, which was very quiet on the backside of the building. The bathroom was a decent size for a 100-year old hotel.

What a gem. Had the pleasure of staying here for my 60th birthday!
Loved everything about the hotel, the location...perfect....the room....perfect....bed was very comfy. We stayed in room 1500 facing Powell. I was pleased to see that the window opened and was able to get that nice cool refreshing air in the room. We had a ceiling fan as well and with the help of earplugs were able to have a good nights sleep. Is it noisy? yes, especially if not used to city noise. But with earplugs all was well. They even provide those. Also found a complimentary bottle of wine in our room. Not a wine drinker but appreciated the nice touch. Would highly recommend. Loved it!

Room Tip: I'm a light sleeper so the earplugs were a must. Had a great night's sleep with them. Don...

Green Features: If you want the maid to make your bed without putting on clean sheets they recommend doing so. With the shortage of water I think this is great. Let's all pitch in and do what we can to help the shortage.
