“Great amenities, location was so-so”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

My family stayed here in one of the 3 bedroom suites and the room itself was AWESOME! Gorgeous decorations and amenities, including a full kitchen, dining room, family room, and washing machine. The staff at the hotel was top-notch, as well! Our only complaint was the location - if you are walking at night, be sure you are not alone. It was a 15-20 minute walk to get anywhere in SF, and the public transit was unbelievably hit-or-miss, which meant we did a lot more walking than anticipated. As with anything in SF, be ready to shell out some serious $$ for this place.

We were upgraded to the Presidential Suite and it was awesome! The suite is "Vegas" style suites. Equivalent to a suite at the Venetian or Palazzo. This suite included a complete kitchen with a full size washer and dryer. All silverware, pots, pans, and glasses were included in the suite. The suite has some nice upgrades to include a bose surround system and bose alarm clock. The bathroom can easily compete with any upscale spa. The view was not great as we had a view of the inside of the courtyard which is nothing extravagant. We had views of the next door neighbors and nothing fantastic but the room was outstanding. This is a time share so to save money the Wyndham does not provide daily house cleaning services. I believe they do provide a service for a charge. However, if you need sheets or towels the staff is quick to provide them for you. The staff was extremely professional and very helpful with any situation. They have a concierge who can assist with any needs and will try to sell you a time share which if you attend their meeting they will pay for your parking (depends how long you stay at the hotel)

Room Tip: Parking is about 40 bucks a day. I believe there is a charge to have your room cleaned daily too. I...

Our final hotel of our 2 week honeymoon west coast road trip, and it was a pleasant stay.

The Good:
It was a nice stay and the room was clean and well stocked with the usual amenities, plus the benefit of a kitchen. Also, washing machines are available on each alternate floor with the hotel supplying detergent.
Close to SF attractions like Union Square, Chinatown and the tram to Fisherman's Wharf
Valet parking available, and didn't take too long to bring the car around - easier as well if you call reception before going down to the lobby

The not so good:
As it's a timeshare, they try the hard sell when you check in, offering coupons and cookies. They try to invite you to a free breakfast (as this is usually an additional charge) to sell you the timeshare, and if you do sign up, they will waive the valet fees. After a long drive from Sequoia National Park, the last thing my wife and wanted was to be sold a timeshare
As with most downtown SF hotels, it is quite pricey once you include taxes, city charge and valet.
Like other reviews have stated, the bed feels like it's only a double size, which means if you are quite tall or large, you'll dislike the bed and find it uncomfortable. A king size bed would've been preferred.
Because it's timeshare, there's no daily room service. You will need to call reception if you need it.

Once you get over the negatives, it is quite a nice hotel and well decorated.

Hi Dezza1982

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay at the Canterbury. Overall, I was happy to read that you enjoyed your stay. We want to provide a great experience to our guests. We do have some different nuances here at the Canterbury and am glad that your overall stay was pleasant. We are located close to Union Square and do provide the convenience of being right in the heart of the city.

Our culture is to provide a Count on Me! level of service and hope that you had this experience during your stay.

We hope you will come and visit us again. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance upon your return.

Exceptional treatment upon arrival. Avoid the timeshare pitch. The rooms are unique. Last 2 times we have .ooked out into a lovely garden of a neighbouring building. Quiet hotel since there are few rooms on each floor.
Draw back is that the one bedroom units have queen beds--unless you would want to sleep on the pull-out sofa. Not our idea of an enjoyable evening to move furniture.
Helpful with suggestions for dining and other sites.
Went to Pacific Cafe in outer Richmond for dinner. It is every bit as good as it was when it opened 40 years ago
Parking fee of $31 plus tax. Oh well, it is THE City.

Room Tip: Get a room on the west side of the building for better views.

Hello Grammawa44,

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay here at the Canterbury. We are always happy to hear when our guests enjoy their stay. Our staff work hard to provide top service and it sounds as if we did just that during your stay.

As you pointed out, the 1 Bedroom units do have a pull out sofa in the living room. Early next year we will be entering into our 6 year renovation where you will see a completely different look in the interior of the rooms. It is hard to believe that it has been 5 years since we opened!

During this time we will be replacing the mattresses on both the beds and in the sofa beds, as well as providing a fresh new look to the inside of our units. We hope you will be coming to visit after we complete the renovation to see our new look and feel.

As we are located in the heart of the city, we do have some limitations where we cannot provide king sized beds in the 1 Bedroom units and still allow for a spacious feeling that we try to provide in a historic building.

Thanks again for providing your feedback and we hope to see you again soon!

Kind Regards,

Matthew Jones

Rooms are nice. The only negative is check out time is slightly too early which is 10am for majority of Wyndham Resort Hotels - which is really too early, especially - for Resorts.
After having a long trip to travel, or dinner at SF plus show/jazz club, etc. check out time should be not be before 11 am or 12 noon.

Everyone working at the hotel is very friendly - especially, manager on duty was helpful. Walking distance to Union Square - a lot to do... oh well, SF comes with expensive overnight parking...and... garbage truck sound... It has gym, a play room...

Downside is they want you to go to a "free breakfast" and listen to the timeshare pitch in return of some gifts. This really should not be a sales pitch, but it is. One Bedroom Deluxe for the night...

Room Tip: Deluxe with good size kitchen; Corner unit facing street - view (just avoid trash day... forgot when...

Hello Munki888,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience here at the Canterbury. We appreciate hearing the nice comments regarding the friendliness of our staff. Thank you for pointing that out!
I can certainly understand your position on the check out time. It is something that the staff work diligently in getting the rooms ready for our new guests checking in. It does take them more time having the kitchens in the units. They work hard to make sure the cleanliness is in top condition for our guests and I hope it showed during your stay.

We hope that you will be coming to stay with us again in the future. If there is anything that we can do before your next stay, please feel free to contact us. Again, thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay!

This location is pretty good if you don't mind walking a few blocks from Union Square. Inside, it is very beautiful. They have done an excellent job with the decor and the staff is very friendly and professional. It was one of the smoothest check-in's I've ever had. Downside is they want you to go to a "free breakfast" and listen to the timeshare pitch. However, we were just clear that we were not interested and it wasn't brought up again. We were in a one bedroom unit and it was really nice - great layout. Downside is they do not have a pool or hot tub.

Hi RLFreed,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding your recent stay with us at the Canterbury. I was happy to read that you enjoyed the resort and that the check in was one of the smoothest that you have experienced. We try to provide that Count On Me! service to our guests and hope that was what you experienced during your stay.

I also wanted to thank you for your kind comments on the decor of the resort. We are gearing up for our 5 year soft goods renovation of our rooms early next year. It is hard to believe it has been 5 years, but we feel this will help to give a new feeling to the rooms and help to provide that special feeling during your stay.

We do hope you will be visiting us again in the near future. If there is anything that we can do before your next stay, please feel free to reach out.

This hotel is located in the heart of San Fran. and the staff at the Wyndham were excellent. Everyone from the bellman, guest registration and concierge were spot on. They saw to it that our 5 day stay was full of things to do and places to see. Devin @ guest registration was exceptional as was Ell the concierge. Our accommodations were very clean and was what we expected. We will be staying at the Wyndham again the next time we are in San Francisco.

Room Tip: The higher the room the better the view. No swimming Pool
