Overall the hotel is really quite nice although when taking into consideration it was built in 1905 and survived intact the fires after the 1906 earthquake it is very cool. The place is dated but in a cool way, the locations fine and the service was excellant. The carpets need replacing period; they are gross. Room was small but for the age of the building, expected. Elevator old and small but again from the historic perspective, cool.

A quaint hotel with a mix of old fashioned charm and modern amenities. The staff were very helpful, the hotel is located only a short walk away from Union Square and they provided free wine and cheese in the evening. We spent 4 nights there and I would not hesitate to go back.

The 'old world charm' does NOT make up for the abysmal experience that is this place. I don't expect luxury but my husband and I came here in May and it was 95 degrees and there was NO fan or cooling system whatsoever. We slept in a room that was only big enough for a bed (which is fine , I don't care about a big room but it was like a furnace and we had no indication that it was so small and so HOT). The room faced the street and while it had a cute fire escape out the window, the combination of the intense heat all night and the constant noise of the street made for an overall awful experience, needless to say neither of us slept that night. The beds are also very uncomfortable and the bedspreads didn't seem clean. The bathroom was nice. $37 for overnight parking (rip off but standard for San Francisco). Staff were fine but nothing great. In general, this place is not worth it and I would rather stay in a hostel which is more comfortable and an eighth of the price.

Very friendly environment. Patrick, ran out to help with bags upon arrival. Awesome room with flat screen TV. Hotel also had a nice happy hour. Also, there was a great Italian, restaurant next door. Two more blocks up the hill you will find CVS and Trader Joes.

Room Tip: Double bed deluxe interior

Was pleasantly surprised upon opening the door to my room to find two separate bedrooms sharing a common bath. A little unique to have the sink next to the bed however. The hotel definitely had character and old world charm . The breakfast was nothing special fruit , pastry or cereal; what was nice was the nightly wine and cheese and the overall friendliness of the staff. Parking, well that is another issue. Valet only and 37 per day, ouch. All in all, for a non national non chain type hotel , this one is worth a chance and WOULD STAY AGAIN.

Good location for price. Breakfast maybe kind of boring after a few days, but being included turned out to be convenient. Too much moquette in the rooms and hallways for my liking. Staff members not ALL kind the same way (I switched from someone who gave me the wrong room without fixing it, to others very helpful and responsive). An overall good deal, considering you are in SF!

Convenient location, 10 min walk to downtown, same to china town, to cable car.Cosy room, but very small even tiny. Clean bathroom. Furniture seems to be very old. Elevator looks quite dangerous. Good coffee is served all day long in the lobby.
