I was traveling alone with my 2 little kids last week, and we stayed at the Hotel Del Sol because it had great rates, free parking and a great location for our purposes. It's basically one of the old motor courts that got a FIESTA face lift! It's bright and happy, with music playing in the courtyard. When we checked in they gave my kids these little bags full of fun stuff like sunglasses and bubbles, which made them very happy. They have good coffee and tea in the lobby and a free continental breakfast. The rooms are pretty small and simple, but modern and cutely done. They have DVD and VCR players in every room, and they have a cabinet in the lobby with movies and games you can borrow for free. My kids were very happy with this! The afternoon and evening staff were especially nice and helpful.
Free parking is a major bonus. If you're traveling with kids, you should know that not every room has a tub, so you should ask when you book. Also, there's a great playground 2 blocks away on Chestnut, and there's a terrific cafe right around the corner on Greenwich (Abigail's). There's also an IHOP 3 blocks away and a Mel's Diner 3 blocks away. I noticed there's a bike rental place right on Lombard too.
Anyway, it's not fancy, but it's very cute and it's a great deal!

The real selling points of this hotel are its location and the free parking. The updated motel has free parking underneath the rooms and we parked on arrival and didn't need to move our car until we left after 3 nights.

The hotel is clean, comfortable and welcoming and offers a very basic breakfast to get you started in the morning. There was no computer to check the internet, so you need to go to the Marina Public Library in Chestnut Street a few minutes walk away - limited opening hours though.

We had a corner room overlooking Webster Street and it was quite noisy with the windows open, so we had to sleep with them closed. The room was large, with a large walk-in cupboard where we stored all our suitcases. There is only a shower, no bath tub.

It is a very easy walk to Chestnut Street where you can catch the number 30 bus (on the corner of Webster and Chestnut Streets - look for the yellow marking on the lamp post). This bus takes you to Ghiradelli Square, Fishermans Wharf, Columbus Avenue (with all its Italian restaurants), Chinatown and Market Street. The number 28 bus on Lombard street goes to the Golden Gate bridge and the Golden Gate Park. Get a MUNI pass and hop on and off the buses, cable cars and trams all day.

Loved staying here. Very clean, colorful rooms with bright, funky furniture. Set up like a motor inn, with parking underneath your room. Staff friendly. A bit on the noisy side but more than tolerable. Outstanding location for what we wanted to do. Great value as well!

This motel is as advertised. Great location, colorful decor, covered parking, pleasant rooms, cookies in the afternoon all good. We had no problem with the overflow parking -- actually preferred it to the tight spots in the courtyard. My only problem was the price -- Sunday night $160, Monday and Tuesday $120. It seemed about $20-$30 over priced for what you get... the breakfast is modest, courtyard can be noisy, no bathtubs in the rooms. We would consider going back because of the great location, easy walk to Union Street and Chestnut Street shopping.

Although Union Square has nicer hotels for the money, I prefer the location of the Marina district. Hotel del Sol seemed like it would be the nicest option in the Marina area. The location of the hotel is great, and we liked the colorful decor in the room. However, in the end our room really felt like a cheap apartment from the 60's. It was dark, low ceilinged and had a funny smell. We were "upgraded" to a junior suite which had a small living area with a pull-out couch and TV, and TINY bedroom. I don't recommend booking, or paying extra for, this room. Since I was travelling with my teenage son, he got the pull-out and I got the bedroom. Two adults in the bedroom would have been really cramped. The pull-out sofa was extremely uncomfortable, thin, uneven mattress, cheap quality sheets, and stained, old blanket. My bed in the bedroom, however, was very comfortable. I looked into a double room as they were cleaning in the morning, and I would definitely request a double on the third floor if I were to return here. Nicer looking than our "suite".

There was a lot of noise from the courtyard and pool, but I already knew this and so it didn't really bother me. We also heard some noise from late night revellers leaving local bars. This is not a quiet, peaceful hotel by any means so if you are looking for that, look elsewhere.

Staff was always friendly and the included breakfast was really fantastic; good coffee, OJ, bagels, great muffins and breads (not your Costco variety). Free SF Chronicle.

I would probably try the Cow Hollow Inn next time, just down the street.
