“No-frills but convenient.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2014

The location of the hotel is very convenient, a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf, on bus and cable car lines. There's a mall with Trader Joe nearby. You have to pay extra for the refrigerator in room, but it's worth it if you prefer to save on restaurants (but don't try to save if you don't really have to, San Francisco restaurants are amazing, and for breakfast, the grilled cheese sandwich at Boudin's at the Wharf is to die for). It's a little deserted at night but I felt reasonably safe walking alone.

The room was no-frills but big and clean. Heater was a bit too noisy but worked well. I've asked for a room facing courtyard, and it was reasonably quiet. There is a nightclub next door but I couldn't hear anything from it, although when people come out the door and talk loudly, this was annoying, but I only had this problem for one weekend night.

People at the reception were friendly and helpful. There's also a bike rental shop next door, I've rented a bike one day and went to Sausalito and Tiburon, a great ride.

I didn't have a car but this should be a really convenient place to stay if you have one. Together with the reasonable price, I'd recommend this place, unless you really need a very quiet place to sleep (but I'm not sure this is easy to find in SF).

As a first time visitor to San Francisco I took the advice on this website and booked this motel. It met all expectations and the parking was something that we had to have with a rental SUV on our road trip. The rooms were nicely decorated and had good linens, and were very clean. they were fully serviced every day of our stay. we did not need the car in the city and left it there while we walked to Fisherman's Wharf 5 minutes away and North Beach for dinner in the evenings and took the buses or cable cars. we did use the car one day for a trip to the Napa Valley so it is good to have transport if you have the option. It is not a fancy hotel but the price was reasonable when compared to many other well known hotels brands in the similar locality. The only negative was the lack of a fridge in the rooms and only an ice bucket. Whilst covered and under video surveillance, the parking is not gated or secure, but we did not have any problems with security, however the signs saying do not leave any valuables in the car made us a little uneasy on arrival.

Room Tip: Room 305 an 306 were located away from the elevator and ice machine and well nice and quiet,, The so...

We stayed here for two nights last week. The hotel is just on the edge of North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf is about 8 minutes walk away and the fantastic restaurants of Little Italy are right on your doorstep, we were amazed at how good the location was. The hotel had everything we needed, it was large and had a great view from the balcony, it was also spotlessly clean and had secure parking. The concierge was happy to print off our online boarding card for us which we were grateful for, thank you. San Francisco is a wonderful city, we will certainly be returning and would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Try to get on the top floor, great views of the San Francisco sky line!!

I found the Columbus Motor Inn many years ago top rated in the AAA-tourbook. And I've stayed there since then once or twice a year. I've booked rooms there for friends of mine (first time visitors often), who also became repeat guests throughout the years. The hotel rooms and the hallways underwent a total makeover (don't know when, but I think within the past 3 years). Flat screens replaced the TV-sets. The bathrooms if I'm not wrong, however, remained unchanged.
Positive:
Unbeatable/perfect location (North Beach & Fisherman's Wharf) for exploring the city
Cable car turnaround (Powell-Mason-Line) 1 block away
Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown within walking distance
Dozens of Restaurants and Cafes within walking distance
Clean, quiet, decent sized rooms
The best value in that area (compared to other hotels in North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf)
Free covered parking
Negative:
Bathroom basic and shows signs of wear.
Water pressure low

I mention the negative only because I review fact-bound.

The rooms are not fancy and the former color scheme was more to my taste, but you get in-room coffee maker, ironing board, a good night's sleep, and a great location at a more than reasonable price.

There are a couple of sister properties (check: www.columbusmotorinn.com)

Personally I can't think of a better place to stay in San Francisco. To me it's perfect. I'm glad I discovered the place. Congratulations to Mr. Garcia and his team. I always look forward to being back.

This isn't the nicest hotel in the world. But it's a great option for the price and location.
Pros:
- Good location, many restaurants are walking distance
- FREE PARKING!!!! For one car.
- 120 plus tax a night

Cons
- Old
- Muggy

I would recommend friends and family to stay here!

I've stayed in San Fran hotels for a week in December on and off for the last decade (never at the same one twice). Usually I've chosen something at a foo-foo boutique place with small rooms but great architecture / history / fancy lobbies / nice restaurants attached for <150 bucks. Inevitably, though, there has been something that annoys me -- either the wifi is iffy, or the elevator is next door making noise, or there is street noise.

Columbus Motor Inn is the categorical opposite of that sort of place. It's no frills -- in fact the dot is coming off my review due to the basic ugliness of some of the appurtenances -- but it was extraordinarily functional: clean, working wifi, large room, quiet, good sitting space, nice neighborhood cafe & bars. I'm going to have to seriously think of coming back.

We stayed here for two nights in September. Other hotels were extortionate at this time of year with $30-$40 per night car parking. The Columbus Motor Inn was a reasonable rate for this popular city and also had free car parking.
The room was large, well furnished, quiet, clean and comfortable and the location was good. The neighbourhood felt safe and it is withing walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf.
