“Good accomodation in the heart of the city”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

I had back to back stays at this hotel while in San Francisco for work. The rooms are nice and large, with a bay window seating area. The beds are Marriott comfortable. The 2 odd things were the size of the bathroom sink and the closet. Both were absurdly small. I could not wash my hands in the sink without splashing water everywhere since the small, round bowl was too confining. The closet was not deep enough to accomodate a rod going from side to side, so instead there are 2 short rods that go front to back.
The food was good and the lounge was OK. At the lounge, some sort of meat with breakfast is the norm and this hotel did not provide any meats.
I lost my key on the last week and had a difficult time getting a new key even though I had my ID. I was asked where the old key was (I had already said that I left it in the room) and was asked why I left it in the room (duh, I forgot it...). The desk person was rude and unhelpful. The checkin process leaves something to be desired as there is no defined line and no one can see the order of arrivals since there are large pillars in the way. The second week, there was a long line waiting and someone walked in and walked right up to the desk and got assistance before everyone else. Bad design, and bad planning on Marriott's part.
I still think the JW right down the street is a better deal for the money.

This hotel is ideally located in the Union Square area, making several must see destinations within easy walking distance. Also conveniently located near several good restaurants, coffee shops and convenience stores. The great friendly service I've come to expect from all Marriotts more than met my expectations at this property. The rooms are not over the top in their design, space or luxury, however I have stayed at other hotels in the area and can say again this hotel exceeded my expectations (for this area). I was extremely pleased wiht the room in fact. Bigger than the norm for SF, everything was very clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and a great view and a nice big TV. All staff in this hotel were extremely helpful, including the conceirge on duty on a Sunday who helped us find our way onto the BART system and get to our first NFL game!

Arrived at the hotel - Front desk was nice an curtious. Hotel location was great - smack right in the middle of everything downtown.
The room was very nice with a great view.
Had breakfast at the lounge on floor 28 and again service and food were very good and the view was excellent.
Overall a great experience.

Room Tip: Any room is good but the top floors are the best.

Firstly, to my confusion ,there are 2 Marriotts at Union Square. This is the not so glamorous one.
Summary - no problem, pleasant enough stay, but i wouldn't say luxurious. staff ok, rooms ok, food ok, pricing a little expensive for what it is, but San Fran is expensive, so it is ok compared to other places. Location, great.

Staff: Nothing to complain about, there were no problems and staff were nice, assisted whenever i required it, but just missed that step up to the top level of restaurants. Like I said, they didn't do anything wrong, but you can just feel the difference when you step up in class of hotel.

Rooms: We had a junior suite or king corner, can't remember, which was again, nice enough size, not overally huge. I was a bit disappointed that there was no mini bar in the room, no complimentary water which i would think would be thrown in considering the amount of money you are paying. Plastic bin (i know it sounds crazy) but it is just these little things that separate good hotels from great hotels. When I mentioned the mini bar and the water at checkout ,the reservations desk did apologise as she believed it should have had it, but she wasn't sure and again, it seemed to be in the too hard basket to clarify it. I should have asked earlier, but it was not a big deal, just a personal preference to have it.

Location:
Great location right at Union Square, a block away so you can walk to all the shops. Very convenient.

Overall summary - a bit overpriced, not upmarket glamourous, but compared to what else is available for pricing, i would most likely consider staying there again because it is central and no major dramas with the hotel.

This is a very high end marriott. Doormen, concierge lounge. Luxurious rooms with nice views of the San Francisco area.

Service was excellent, room nicely appointed and nice size

The best thing about this hotel is the location. Steps away from great shopping, restaurants and and Chinatown and little Italy.

Room rate was reasonable but the in hotel restaurant was very overpriced and not worth it. So many choices to eat. Avoid hotel restaurant if
Possible.

Stayed there for a conference. Room was very nice and in great shape. Food at the lobby restaurant was superb (I went for the salmon). Walking distance to shopping, BART and other means of public transportation

The room was average and had a chipped tub. Bathroom was a good size but looked used hard. The front desk help was not particularly helpful//friendly. Certainly not like I have experienced in other Marriott stays. For over 300 dollars a night, and as a gold member, I would choose a different Marriott in San Fran.
