Love the location. Dressing up is fun, but many of the locals wear nice casual dress and feel right at home. The voices, sets, direction, and of course the opera orchestra are wonderful.

The opera house is glorious a must do if you are here. The restaurant is great prior too. I love the sets they are well thought out and the singers are wonderful to see in person.

The War Memorial Opera House is impressive but rather marble barn like and front seats of upper circle far too far away especially when the acoustics are no match for say the Met in NYC.

I went 3 times in a June, showboat was mostly well sung but the balance between sung and spoken was not well done and the work as such needs tightening up, the story whilst notable for its era languished.

The Traviata I heard was superb from an ensemble point if view although too far away. My main gripe though was a wonderful soprano but with no E flat trills and a smooth string mid range she should have been singing Arabella no Violetta. Critics hated it but trills aside an involving restating of the John Copely production.

The Buttefly, even more expensive fir same seating area was not a good evening. The star soprano probably wasn't having a good day but yet again the wrong voice...excellent tenor and baritone, once again! This time music director who's given such a good Traviata dragged the tempos all night probably to help the Soprano.

A fellow opera goer told me that standing room is best at War Memorial but that night it wasn't sold out so no standing room behind stalls!

Premium seats are so expensive you could buy all the available DVD's if the work and still have change!

We had an amazing experience at the opera! La Traviata was amazing. I had never been to an opera before and highly recommend everyone go at least once!

The SF Opera is a treasure for the Bay Area. The talent that they have grown and the stars that they attract make this a cherished musical institution for N. California. The July performance of Traviatta was stunning. You should be a subscriber.
