We ended up at top of the steps rather than the bottom so walked down rather than up. It was absolutely beautiful. The views and the gardens are amazing. I think you actually get to enjoy them more this way. Most folks on the way up seemed more concerned with reaching the top of the steps rather than enjoying the surroundings.

We stumbled across the steps trying to get to the Embarcadero from North Beach. I'm a runner and one of my daughters plays soccer, so we enjoyed the workout. My wife found the steps to be a bit of a struggle, but worth the views from Coit Tower. Very cool and peaceful as you head towards the bay. If you can find it, and don't mind some exercise, do it!

We had a hard time finding the Filbert Steps at the top of Telegraph Hill. Had to ask for directions as it wasn't really marked, but it was a nice little workout once we found it! Great views and you go past really beautiful gardens!

tip: another way of doing this is catching a bus up to the Coit Tower and then going DOWN the steps. That way you are facing the bay all the way and it's not as hard.
We climbed though, and it was fantastic nevertheless.
Go on a nice day to get the most of it. Bring a water bottle.

After a picnic at nearby Levi's Plaza, we worked off the sourdough calories by climbing the Filbert Steps, a narrow pedestrian pathway of 377 wooden stairs to the top of Telegraph Hill.

Telegraph Hill was originally the site of a visual telegraph station (semaphore) used to signal the arrival of ships. The steps were constructed so that Italian fishermen and dock workers could commute on-foot to the wharves from their North Beach homes. Recently, Telegraph Hill has become populated by a loveable flock of wild South American parrots.

We searched in vain for the parrots, as we climbed past charming homes and colorful gardens. At the top of the hill, we all but forgot about the birds as we admired Coit Tower (closed for renovation), and sat mesmerized by the view of San Francisco Bay. Suddenly, we heard a loud shrill squawk, and then witnessed a fly-by of about one hundred olive green parrots with cherry red heads.

The Filbert Steps star as a magical passageway to the top of Telegraph Hill. Stars are also deserved for being a stair-master substitute, uncrowded access to Coit Tower, and wild parrot sanctuary.
