It's kind of a one of a kind classic. It's not pretty though the exterior is kind of a neat period design. Way long ago it briefly housed the NBA team in town when they first arrived in San Francisco for a year or so. And that's what it looks like ... half of an old old basketball arena more than a theatre. Has a huge standing floor and balcony area and a huge stage. Sound wasn't great at first but improved through the night and overall i liked the atmosphere of the place. That being said, through no fault of it's own it's in a very run down area with lots and lots of homeless and vagabonds to ask you for a hand out as you walk to and from the building... best to attend events here in groups if your going to walk very far to the building. I know a lot of locals don't like this place and it's no comparison to the Fillmore, but it is what it is and has it's uses.

I do like the location of BGCA. It's near the Mission & convenient to everything really. this is our second Phish 3 night run there. I learned if you take the elevator and accidentally get off on the wrong floor they yell really loud at you. ( oops sorry) That being said I can't say thanks enough to the security people that allowed me to get back in when I was totally frantic one night as I had left my show poster in the venue... found it! They escorted me around to look and the venue was emptied.... I am sure they were tired after the show . That was very nice. As far as any other complaints ... they do not give you the lid to your water bottle. then you spill your water.argh. upon questioning I guess they had people throw full bottles at a rock concert once??? who knew. I actually like the sound in there, rich, very rich. dead on and lower level is the best obviously. got that one night. It was GA and there are seats that have obstructed views,,, there are these big pillars I think three of them??? so there are these streaks of unoccupied seats behind them. They are literally blocked you see nothing but the edges of the stage. But mostly you dont get those if you get in a bit early. then the rest of the seats in the house are all pretty much good. and the lights... if you like kuroda are simply a visual assault.I did a set in the floor, and although it looks very scary to a 40 + year old at a distance there was a bit of space and air down there. Great venue.

Saw Phish a few times. Great place. I was upset they roped every good seat on the upper level. If its general admission, then it should be for everybody. I show up first and every seat is already taken? Not cool!

...people to gather to watch large events with a stage and seats and lights and speakers and concession stands and programs and expensive prices to see acts from afar when you could watch them close-up on TV or youtube. If you are into convention centers, this
is a great place for you to explore as it is kitty-corner from the City Hall which is the real attraction in Civic Center Plaza.

Good sized auditorium with plenty of bars and restrooms conveniently located.
The sound and lighting were great and the views were good from most seats although some were restricted due to pillars.
