Owner description: An off-the-beaten-track architectural landmark of the Victorian era worth visiting.

The Columbarium is only 3 miles down Geary Street from Union Square, but it's a totally different experience. Instead of tourists and street performers, you'll discover a jewel-like building dedicated to honoring loved ones with displays of their urns and treasured possessions. The "residents" represent the wonderful diversity that has always been San Francisco. Asians are in niches next to those with Italian or Irish last names. Some displays include the urns of both grandparents and grandchildren. While the site is dedicated to the dead, it celebrates their lives by showcasing the little "treasures" of their living past along with their urns. Pictures of pets and Giants badges are as common as wedding pictures and military insignia. The overall impact is one of optimism and respect rather than of loss.

The Neptune Society helped us with our loss and did it a corporate manner. However, we were exceptionally pleased with the Boat Captain "Stewart" and his crew who treated us with kindness, carring, and thoughtfulness; because of the crew, we would recommend the Neptune Society to anyone...!!

Off the beaten track in San Francisco is America's cheeriest repository of human ashes. The magnificent Columbarium -- a century-old, copper-domed neoclassical bldg. with stained glass -- displays windowed niches filled with cookie jar, teapot, brandy decanter and piggy bank urns. You'll see photos and memorabilia of thousands of the dearly departed, including politicians, veterans of the Gold Rush, celebrities and folks who just want to rest near Golden Gate Park. Longtime caretaker Emmitt Watson tells personal anecdotes and intimate details of many of the entombed. And he gave me a tour that transformed "morbid" into a merry walk down memory lane.
