Great fun, informative and interesting. You can stroll along the pier and see the historic ships and read their placards or for $5 more- you get an entry to all ships and programs by the park service. We really enjoyed this.

If you are visiting Pier 39 don't miss this fascinating attraction. A great place for children or anyone to learn about maritime history and to experience these wonderful old vessels first hand. The Park Service puts on great programs - quite well done - not your usual dull museum spiels - these guys really get into character and have fun doing it!

First of all, we may not have been there on the best day for this experience and it may be coloring my viewpoint. It was pouring rain, so the view was not particularly good and the rain was flying at us from what appeared to be all directions. It also made the decks a bit slick.

However, there is also a lot to commend this activity. You can't beat the price-$5 for adults and kids are free. Additionally, the park ranger giving a presentation was unbelievably thorough. We had only had ninety minutes to spend on the ships, so we had to leave his presentation about halfway through, but if one was a "ship-buff", I think it would have been a tremendous experience.

The informational signs aren't bad, but I wish there had been a short audio tour that would have been a bit more engaging for a twelve year old. As a whole, it was somewhere between average and good. Perhaps a nicer day would have pushed it to four circles.

Hyde Street Pier is a must see. Even if you are not interested in old ships. The Balcutha and other displays are very well presented. Even kids will enjoy it.

The Hyde Street ships are a wonderful historical attraction for anyone interested in the maritime history of San Francisco. Nearby is a visitors center that shows the history of San Francisco and a maritime museum that looks at its maritime past. The ships are part of the National Park Service and only cost $5 per adult and free for children. There are tour guides and videos on each ship, and pier tours are given throughout the day. Especially interesting for children. Allow a couple of hours minimum.
