Casa Loma Hotel

All the things that I heard about this hotel got confirmed. The location is great, close to Civic Center, the area is very safe at night and hip. The walls are pretty thin so you do hear other people at night but we were lucky not to have to much noise. There is no heating so it can get pretty chill during the night. Even tough there are just 2 showers and 2 bathrooms on each floor(we had a sink in the room with no hot water), we always found one that was available. Parking spaces are hard to find, we rented a car for a day and we parked 8 blocks away. We had free WiFi which worked terrible during the day, but pretty good during the night. I would recommend this place to someone who is travelling on a tight budget.

Location
Located in upper Haight area, its fairly easy to find driving from airport but would not have a clue with public transport, think you would need to change buses on market. The area itself is very residential San Fran, within a block is a liquor store and cafe for breakfast (Alamo). 3 blocks is Haight street which has CVS, 3-4 bars, restaurants, smoke shops and other cool arty cafes- the main part of Haight & Ashbury is about 20 minutes walk or 10 blocks. Although street is quite busy from car noise, there is little noise at night from people etc. I found that parking in immediate area is free (but be wary that some streets do street cleaning from 8am so you will need to move car) - spaces are limited and once you find one stick with it because you will loose it (even if you leave at 1am to get food).
Room
Very simple deluxe room that offered a the most creaky bed I have ever slept in, but mattress was soft and slept adequate- although as others have said there is quite a bit of general road noise which woke me up a couple of times when the odd Harley goes past. The room is spacious with a small sink (toilet and bathroom are shared- but was never busy), a tall wardrobe, two random chairs- no desk but fridge is placed on a side table. There is also a TV on top of the wardrobe which is general cable. The room offered a simple lamp, alarm clock and two spare plugs but no kettle and no heater/air con as felt very cold at night. Overall the decor was ok but carpet was heavily stained. When arrived in room smoke detector was buzzing (due to low battery) and remote of TV was not working.
Staff
Well don't expect much. Staff are not rude but really can't be bothered atmosphere- very unenthusiastic check-in/or help with anything. As I said the room was welcomed with constant buzzing from the smoke alarm- told staff whom told me here is a battery, please go and change it (as he said he never changed one before & didn't know (??) (which was ok as I could reach it but you couldn't expect a older female to do this) not very health and safety as wires are loose and was worried about electrical shock- last thing I need after 12 hour flight from Japan. Then remote didn't work- just handed some batteries for that to change as well. When later asked about places to eat- told to look on the internet as was busy watching a movie on the computer in reception. For over hundred dollars a night, expect some effort of customer service from the staff. Although he did not come across as rude - it felt I was alway an inconvenience to him.
Facilities
The WIFI is secure and worked very well. Behind reception there is some washing machines and vending machines- other than that no other facilities- including no elevator so prepare if you have heavy luggage (because I doubt staff will assist).
There appear to be 2 shower rooms- small but water works fine with fixed shower gel and two toilet cubicles on each floor. They were clean and were ok. They provide decent enough towels in the room.
Overall it was a busy time in Frisco, so this was cheapest option as I booked late. It felt good to see residential San Fran as always stayed in San Bruno due to better value for money. Room overall was fine, staff could make some more effort (or at least apologise for room not being properly prepared). Probably would not stay here again- the hotel cuts a fine line between a hostel (service wise) but with hotel prices.

Room Tip: Ask to not face Filmore as it is noisy.

Great location, there are quite a few trendy cafe's around, is about a 200m walk from a blue bottle coffee place. That can almost match the cafe's in Melbourne. In San Francisco I have found it difficult to find areas where I feel safe at night travelling by myself, but this is a good area. The hotel itself is clean and simple. Bring earplugs though the walls are thin! I had a room that faced inward to an atrium inside the building, the sound seems to echo up this so you can hear conversations from other rooms clearly. Closing the window helps, but only a little bit, and you would not want to close the window on a hot day since this is the only source of air into the room.

Room Tip: Request an outward facing room, I think these might be quieter, and would also have better views.

This hotel was one of the best bargains I have had in a while. While the people working the front desk weren't the most knowledgable right off the cuff, they were more than willing to try and lookup any info you wanted. When we needed an extra blanket or towel they were quick to help. The hotel is super clean and in an awesome location. I was a little nervous about the shared bathrooms, but they were very clean nice and in great condition. The rooms were simple and minimal, but the beds were comfy and they had digital cable in my room and a mini fridge. I highly recommend you stay here if you're looking for a place that's not in the middle of the "tourist area" and easy to get around from.

The non-smoking room stenched with cigarettes. The miss at the lobby explained that it is not possible as all the rooms were not smoking, but suggested we can use air-fresher...seriously?

No elevator. Walls extremely thin. Had to listen to a porno-movie scenario in the nearby room for about half-an-hour. Had to wait for the hot water. The price was ~ 80 USD/night, which in the end is definitely too high for this place. There are better hotels for this value! Was misled by good evaluation on tripadvisor. Will not come back to this hotel.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in September 2013.
Good location (short bus ride into the center of SF), great night life short walk from hotel, good cafe Alamo Cafe across the road (go try out the bagels!!)
The toilets / showers are shared, two on each floor. Very clean and never had to wait.
No lift so dont take heavy suitcase!
Great value for money. Loved our stay in San Fran!

We were staying in the second floor and there was no elevator so we had to carry our suitcases up the stairs. Our room was small and had a sink and a fridge. The view from our room was another room. I guess there was like an atrium in the middle of the building. The walls were extremely thin and the beds were very squeaky, so we could hear everything happening around us and couldn't sleep through any of the 5 nights, because there was always some noise.

There were 2 showers and 2 toilets in our floor for about 15 rooms and they were both clean.

They didn't have a parking lot, so we had to circle around each day to find a parking spot. It was very difficult to find one, because all the streets were already fully parked and we also had to be careful about the no parking signs because of street cleaning on certain days during certain hours. One evening we had to look for it for an hour and then we finally got one three blocks away. I was sorry we didn't book a stay where parking was provided.

Free wi-fi, but we found out about that the last day, bacause the receptionist didn't bother to mention that to us upon check in.
