“OK Hotel!”
Reviewed 20 November 2011

The hotel is a standard HI Express but it has a lot of annoying things to put people off. The air conditioning is noisy - so is the bathroom exhaust. The TV looked old in the age of flat screen televisions. No wireless internet in the room - just a wired one. You are out of luck with an iPad. But there is wireless in the lobby and a couple of free computers in the lobby. There is a touchscreen information facility near the computers but the touchscreen is dodgy.
The room safe is key operated which is weird. No room fridge or minibar. The room did not have a view - you get a window facing other rooms.

Breakfast is loaded with sugar. No healthy choices like oatmeal - brown bread was good quality though. Most hotels in California had oatmeal but this one did not. It can get very busy at breakfast - go early for a seat.

Hotel is very clean and they are keen on composting everything. I found it strange as the breakfast was served in paper plates and cutlery was plastic.

We booked a taxi the night before only to be told that there is no record of this when we had to go to the airport. Luckily it was early morning and there were taxis lining up outside the hotel.

The Amtrak bus drop off point is close by and you can walk to hotel - looked safe at night. Just don't disturb the homeless on the streets. It gets a bit quiet at night.

Anyway the charm of San Francisco made up for the hotel shortcmings. It is a beautiful city. We only had two full days but we saw so much of the city on foot. Don't miss the following whilst you are there:

1. Come to San Francisco by Amtrak - Amtrak train comes to oakland and their thruway bus (must be booked with the ticket) goes on the Oakland Bay bridge into San Francisco. The views from the bay bridge cannot be matched esp. at night. They will drop you at Fisherman's wharf where you can walk to the hotel.

2. Ghirardelli Square: You get great views of Golden Gate and Alcatraz from here. Very charming and a must walk from the hotel.

3. Fisherman's wharf: Not much to do here unless you like seafood. Walgreens is very close by for grocery, souvenirs etc (come out of hotel, turn right and then a right again). There is a McDonalds, Burger king, Chipotle etc. I'm a vegetarian - so ate at Gino's pizza and Chipotle. Boudin bakery is a must see for their wonderfully shaped breads.

4. Walk along the piers all the way to Ferry Building: A great walk and lively in the evenings. You'll find many people jogging and the views are fantastic. The night time view of financial district and bay bridge from Pier 14 is superb. 1 hour walk from the hotel at a slow pace.

5. Muir Woods, Sausalito & Golden Gate: Get a tour company to take you there from the hotel. Wonderful redwood and a charming town in Sausalito. They normally give you an hour at each place. Muir woods is always damp - take an umbrella and warm clothes. If you get motion sickness, sit in the front seat. The road is windy.

6. Alcatraz : We did not get time to do this but it is worth visiting.

7. Walk on Lombard Street all the way to crookedest street: It is a hilly walk - so wear good shoes. You also get great views of the city from Coit tower and Telegraph hill.

8: Ferry building: very nice charming place with views of the bridge. The shops sell some really good gourmet stuff.

Yerba Buena garden was also very nice.

The hotel receptionist will give you a map and I would say - just walk. You'll love the city and the views.

Tip: Stay away from Tenderloin i.e don't wander off Geary and Market street (esp. at night).

We stayed here for 4 nights while visiting our daughter and were very happy. Great "walk to everything" location-- Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Sqaure. We asked for an inside room, which was very quiet. Expanded free breakfast buffet includes scrambled and hard boiled eggs, waffles, chipped beef, cold cereals, wide selection of breads and pastries, fresh orange juice, apples. Free computer use in lobby. Very small exercise room and no pool but guests may use the pool at the Holiday Inn next door. (But you will get plenty of exercise walking all over the city!) My husband thought the bed (we had a king) was more comfortable than the one we have at home.

Room Tip: This hotel fronts on a main, but relatively quiet, street. If you are sensitive to noise request an...

Great location and only 2 blocks from waterfront, trolley stop or F line, plus several great Irish and other bars. Super breakfast each day and nice big rooms. Kept clean and plenty of amenities if you needed anything. A large sightseeing company was adjacent to hotel and great sports bar at the Hyatt across the street with a 7 hour Happy Hour!

Negatives were minor, but there was no coffee in the lobby after breakfast and no in-room refridgerators or microwaves. Been a long time since I encountered that in any hotel property.

We took the SuperShuttle from Oakland, but the BART stops within 1/2 block on Market St and you could just as easily taken the F line right to the hotel.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, as for a room off the street. No noise whatsoever. If you want a view, likely n...

Beautifully appointed hotel, with upgraded rooms, furnishings, bathrooms. The hallways and port windows make you feel like you are on a cruise ship! Huge breakfast room for the complimentary buffet: well attended and restocked frequently, lots of seating. Close enough to the waterfront to walk to all attractions at Fisherman's Wharf: consider taking a taxi after dark. Free internet service with printers in the lobby. "Knuckles" Pub and restaurant across the street was good value and great service.

We had a suite and it was very nice. The free breakfast was good except that the staff did not always refill the selections efficiently ie 2 trays of sausage then later on refill with just bacon instead of having one bacon and one sausage. The hotel across from us had very noisy people. It was fleet week so not much can do about that. That was the only noise that was irratating. Staff very helpful at front desk.

We stayed for two nights. The hotel was very conveniently located within walking distance from the Wharf and any public transportation. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable. I wasn't a big fan of keeping the coffee maker in the bathroom, but that's where it was. I didn't use it, and it cramped the room a little. Breakfast downstairs was very complete and good.

Locale, locale, locale - this hotel was in the perfect location. We stayed for seven days in October and had our little infant with us. The hotel staff was wonderful. They put us in a quiet location and promptly changed out our mini-fridge when it was not working in order for us to keep our baby food cool. The breakfast spread was great but there are so many wonderful restaurants near the hotel within walking distance as well as a Safeway and a Trader Joe's grocery store. You can get anything you need within just a couple of blocks out of your hotel. There were things that the hotel did not have such as a pool or laundry facilities. But, it's an Express hotel - you shouldn't expect too much from one. Those amenities are located at the Holiday Inn if one really needs them. The two issues that we had with the hotel was the wifi was only located in the lobby and the hotel room doors were quite heavy and loud when allowed to shut on their own. Other than that, it is definitely a place to consider when traveling to Fisherman's Wharf!
