What a classic and stylish room this was. It was large in size and super clean. The bathroom was almost as big as a standard hotel room in Manhattan!

The location of the hotel was pretty good as well. Walking distance to downtown. We found lots of reasonably priced food options in the food court at the Westfield centre.

While San Francisco itself was much dirtier and with a whole lot more homeless people than I remember, this hotel was lovely. I can honestly recommend it.

We stayed here for five nights in mid September. Staff were friendly and attentive. Rooms comfortable but old style non flat screen television was a surprise. We had an surprising experience finding blood smeared on the bathroom wall near the light switch one evening upon return. This was cleaned off the next day by housekeeping and apparently attributed to the air-conditioning engineer. Difficult to judge if The Orchard is good value compared to other hotels in San Fran but it is not grand value.

My wife and I stayed four nights at the Orchard just a few days ago. We selected the Orchard as we wanted to be in the center of the city, away from the tourist trap of the wharf and piers.

We selected the Orcahrd based off other reviews and after viewing the Hotel's Web site. We booked via hotels.com.

Please keep in mind, our review is based off how we travel: we just are after a nice, basic hotel and primarily need a bed, hot shower and bathroom. We don't spend much awake time in a hotel while on vacation.

Our room was clean (no bed bugs after inspection), king bed, eletronic safe (that passed the 0000 and 1234 test) and decent sized bathroom. There was no fan in the bathroom and the shower was a tub-based shower with curtain. The grout/caulking was in need for a good scrubbing. Not a deal breaker by any means.

The hotel loves to market itself as a 'green or eco' hotel, however the room had no much areas to place plastic bottles, newspapers seperate from the standard trash. Housekeeping may do this, but we made it a point to have those items on the desk with a note asking them to do so.

TV was a CRT or non flat screen. Not a big deal for us. The front desk had a DVD collection you could borrow. Oh, no real lobby area if you like to read, drink tea, relax, etc.

The room also had a 'sleep CD.' USE IT! Very relaxing and assisted with catching some REM sleep. Speaking of which, this hotel is in a major U.S. city, if you are expecting complete silence, you picked the wrong city to visit. Expect police and fire sirens to happen once or twice a night.

Chinatown is two blocks down on Bush. After dropping about $40 (for two) at a nearby diner on morning one, I walked and got a pork steamed bun at a Chinese bakery for $1.10 on morning two. Score. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant.

You will find more Walgreen's, Wells Fargo's and Starbucks in this town than anything else. All were within two blocks of the hotel.

While more about the city than the hotel, don't support the hobo's. They will be everywhere. (Avoid Market St and the Tenderloin or TL.)

In all, we would recommend the Orchard if you travel like we do: drop off luggage, hit the destinations and return to shower and sleep.

Room Tip: High floor, not facing Powell. You can take BART directly from airport to Powell Station. About...

We stayed at the Orchard Hotel for 3 nights in September. The hotel is in a fantastic location with the trolley car right outside of the front door. A 10 minute stroll down the hill will bring you to Union Square and Westfields, coming back is another thing though, if you are keen to line up for the trolley car (it can take up to an hour to board) thats the easy way to get back, otherwise walk up a couple of blocks and the trolley car will stop at the corner for you to board.

The room is very spacious, a bit dated (I cant remember the last time I saw a square TV (not flat screen)) A flat screen would really update the room, but hey its not everything. Its a very quaint hotel and it has so much charm. The staff are really friendly and help out where they can. The restaurant attached to the hotel is questionable, we had breakfast the first morning and it was ordinary to say the least, the buffet breakfast ($16) is very basic and put me off, the scrambled eggs look like they had been there from the night before. There are heaps of other restaurants is the general vicinity and Loris Diner across from Wallgreens (100m away) is excellent, it really does bring the good old days back.

Overall if you want to stay around Union Square this is a great hotel to stay at.

Room Tip: If you go into Fishermans Wharf and dont want to wait for the trolley car a cab back to this hotel i...

We did alot of research into hotels in San Francisco before we decided on this hotel and booked it because of the reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed, The location was excellent and we walked everywhere and felt safe doing so. The room was so clean and comfortable. We were on the third floor on the front of the hotel and we slept fine. We found everything about this hotel excellent.

Almost forgot we were in a hotel! No crowds, friendly, highly efficient staff, beautiful decor (explosions of fresh orchids everwhere). This small, sweet sactuary offered absolute silence in it's well appointed, clean, modern, peaceful, lovely room. Super comfortable beds (though I recommend asking for a flat pillow if that's your preference, these were a bit on the fluffy side) lighting in all the right places, cordless phone (not that we had to use it to call them to fix anything) and bonus: the fan doesn't come on when you turn on the bathroom light! Coffee pot for making tea (no leftover coffee flavor) great location, desk with outlets for the computer...everything perfect! Only drawback: being a small, almost boutique style hotel, room service closes at 9 pm. Less expensive than the dreaded Park 55, it's the best deal I've come across in a long while. Thank-you Hotel Gods.

When we arrived there was no one to help get bags in from the curb. The front desk employees were not the most helpful, nor did they have a map of the city. When I asked for a map the reply was that "the Concierge was getting some that day"; we never received one. We had a suite which was well furnished and clean. We were a little concerned since we were near the elevator, but there was very little noise. I had trouble getting WiFi and staying connected. There was only 1 package of regular coffee for a one-cup coffee maker; I asked for a 2nd package for the 2nd morning which was left, but on the 3rd morning we were down to 1 package again. Soap was also at a minimum. The person sent to deliver a cork screw didn't know what one was! The location is great. Overall, this hotel would not be our choice for another visit to San Francisco!
