“good hotel BAD neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2014

- Therefore homeless people roaming outside the hotel , sometimes shouting and what not...

- zero sound insulating windows in the room

- heater just for namesake, wasn;t working at all

- no proper entrance markings, i waited outside the hotel for around 10 minutes just to figure from where to get inn, one entrance was from parking lot while other had doors closed and looked more like a garage door then hotel entrance.

Very near to powell station from where the famous tram starts.

Dear amadeus52,

Thank you for your contribution to the Trip advisor community and for providing us with your feedback. We're happy that you enjoyed your stay and that you found the location to be a 3 minute walk to downtown San Francisco. Given our location sometimes noise can be a nuisance and we are currently looking at ways to reduce the impact it might have. We hope to have you again as our guest at the Hotel Metropolis!

Have stayed at Hotel Metropolis multiple times over the last three years. Very friendly staff. Raymond at the front desk always cheerful & helpful. Kudos to him. Boarders on a not so good neighborhood but it's getting better every year. Short walk to Powell Str. (trolley); Union Square (shopping); and the convention center. Several excellent restaurants within walking distance. Has a European "pension" look & feel. Rooms are small, with a very basic layout, but adequate. Just beware, there is the typical "big city street noise" from outside so ask for a back side room. If the room is a bit cold, ask for a space heater (they'll provide it & it works well) Attached restaurant is good, Cannot recommend this hotel enough.

Hotel Metropolis is unassuming from the outside, but its staff and location make it a real find. The hotel is on the corner of Turk and Mason, only 2 blocks from the Powell Street BART station. The rooms are small by modern standards, but clean and nicely decorated. You feel like you are in a European hotel. The staff is very friendly and efficient. They do not have a complimentary breakfast, but have very good coffee in the 2nd floor business lounge every morning from 7am-10am. You should have breakfast and dinner at Farmer Brown Restaurant on the ground floor. Their food is excellent. Their bar was really crowded on a Friday, but I ran into a friend from Washington DC who said he was staying at more expensive hotel nearby but comes to Farmer Brown for dinner and drinks. The main downside of the hotel is that you have to walk past homeless people in the neighborhood to get to the hotel. That is not different from most other downtown hotels in SF. If you need a fully equipped gym, this is not the hotel for you. The exercise room has a treadmill and an elipical. That is it. The vending machines are only on the 9th floor and have a wide variety of foods, some that can be microwaved. Skip the vending machine and go to Farmer Brown's down stairs.

Room Tip: If you want to use the stairs, lower floors are of course better. The elevator is slow, so using th...

The hotel is about a block away from the Westfield mall and Powell station. The room was nice and had all I needed; coffee maker, electrical outlets and free Wi-Fi. There is a free safe in the room that easily held my ipad and could hold a laptop They have taken the existing hotel and added a more hip modern flair. The retro look is in the tile work and around the room. I was on the seventh floor and expected lots of noise with the simple pane windows, but was quite all night.

I wold stay here again.

Stayed with a friend in town visiting San Fran for the first time and we picked Hotel Metropolis for numerous reasons. It is close to shopping with Union Square and Westfield Mall within walking distance. It is also close to the BART transit system (which is really convenient if you are flying out of SFO) as well as being a block from the famed San Fran trolley car line. We had a corner suite that was perfect for us. One room had 2 double beds that were super comfy, and clean with fresh smelling linens and soft soft bedding. I slept like a baby and I typically have a hard time catching ZZZ's in hotel rooms, not here! The other room attached by an interior door was a sitting area with fridge, pull out couch and plenty of space. Lots of room here! The room itself was clean, and well kept. Furniture and fixtures were well taken care of and the bathroom was spotless and clean loaded with fresh towels and awesome organic toiletries! I keep saying clean because my overall impression of the Hotel was that. Everyone really cared and kept the hotel in tip-top guest ready condition. Every staff member we encountered was kind, courteous, and seemed to enjoy their job and it showed. From the parking lot attendant to the front desk clerk to the housekeepers. All had smiles that were genuine and gracious. We enjoyed our short stay immensely and I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area. After a long day of walking around the CIty it is a perfect place to come back to. Relax in your room before heading out for the night then return again to a soft, safe, warm place to sleep. Check out was a breeze too especially when you could grab a hot cup of joe in the library area before heading out! Thanks to the whole staff of Hotel Metropolis for the wonderful experience!

I had read the reviews previously as my travel agent had booked this place. I was a bit worried but once I was their it was nothing like the bad reviews. The staff were sooo frie dly and helped me out heaps especially when my luggage got lost. I was given maps and told me directions for everything. Yeah their was aloy of homeless but if you stay out of their way they stay out of yours. I was a bit worried staying out at night but I was walking around after 10pm with no hassels. Its located so close to shops and the westfield and the main tram. I also loved they had free wifi so I could contact family back in Aus. Considering I was out all day I didnt want a deluxe room but the room I was given was amazing. Softest bed ever! House keeping came everyday and made the bed and touched the room up. :)

My girlfriend and our dog stayed 4 nights to celebrate New Years and had a wonderful time. The staff was friendly, the room was clean and comfortable. We had plenty of hot water in our 8th floor room. The where no problems with the elevator. The room was quiet and we could open the window to get some fresh air. The hotel is a short walk from the Asian Art Museum, which is wonderful and BIG. Larger than the Sackler in DC for example. We will happily return to the Metropolis for our next trip to the Bay, which will hopefully be soon! As for the Tenderloin area. we love it. The hotel is right by Market St, a major retail shopping area in town. Rasputin Records is close. The bar Farmer John is at the base of the hotel and they have great soul music. Any time of day and night we felt perfectly safe.
