“Terrific German food!”

Great spaetzle, fun beer choices and the best potato salad ever. A must eat spot if you are looking for good eats in the Mission area.

“Worth a Return Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2013 via mobile

Our niece suggested this for a change of pace, from what we had been eating on an extended trip. It is at the corner of Folsom and 20th. During happy hour, they have a special where if you order their wurst special, you receive $6 each off your tab, or enough to pay for the beer. First the beer: they have an extensive selection of specialty beers from all over Germany, many that I've never seen. We all enjoyed what we'd ordered 2 really dark and one light. The rest are too lengthy to list here. The menu offers an interesting list of appetizers, soups and salads, again many different than I've seen on German menus elsewhere. Entrees include several schnitzels, and wurst plates, but for the deal mentioned you order off the wurst menu, where you can chose 1 or 2 which are then served with red potato salad, very tasty with a bit of horseradish in the sauce, and sauerkraut that has been sweetened by being cooked with wine and herbs. You have a choice of 10 different wursts including duck and vegetarian. We also ordered a side of spaetzle. Everything was superb. Perfectly cooked wurst, and tasty sides. For dessert we had their almond crescent marzipan, also very good. We were so impressed we went back the next night and had the same plates, but tried different wurst. By the way, don't expect the stein laden dark paneled German restaurant decor. It is friendly but plain and again the food is really good.

“Authenic German Fare at Great Prices”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2013

We were staying at a Victorian Inn about two blocks away from Schmidt's - so we walked over one evening since it was close. Upon entering, there were people seated at the bar and a few tables were occupied by young couples. The interior appears stark at first . . somewhat dark with few decorations . . possibly modern German decor that appeals to the owner. The server was pleasant and explained the menu and we sampled one or two of the German beers on tap. We both decided to have their German sausage special (at only $12) . . you can select different sausages with some superb German sides including braised sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. My wife chose the Bratwurst and I chose two smaller sausages recommended by our server . . they were both excellent and my wife even ordered a second Bratwurst! Definitely try out Schmidt's if you like German food and are in Mission District area.

“Cute little place with great german food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2013

My husband and I went there for dinner yesterday. They open by 5PM on Sundays. So we went with the bart to 16 Street and went 4 blocks streight and 4 blocks right to Folsom Street "Schmidt's". Looks like nothing from outside, but inside it's quite nice, but simple. (No pictures on the wall and votive candles on the tables) We ordered a Frueh Koelsch and a Double Bock. (Where do you get Frueh Koelsch in Amerika!!) We ordered 2 appetizer: the baked Camembert and the Liver Paste' with baked bread. Oh how wonderful, like Germany. Then we ordered from the special menu the Cabbage Rolls with brussels sprouts and potatoe, and The 3 Sausage Plate with Sauerkraut and Potatoes. WOW. Thumb up for the cook. It was delicious. But.... it was to much food for us . The 2 appetizer were good for 4 people. But it was so good we ate all. Nice Service, nice athmosphere, a little unusual for German restaurant, because it is so quite. They have 2 bigger table for 8 and 10 people, and 6 for 4 and 3 for 2 people. If I remeber right. So, it's not a big place. And if you want to take some german stuff home, they sell it. Christmas candy still, Mustard, ketchup, other condiments, coffee cups..... It's worth it to check it out.
We had a great time, and we will be back with friends. Something good to know: If you know Walzwerk in SF and you like it; it is the same Owner. Great job well done. Bis bald und Auf Wiedersehen.
