This is a budget hotel but great value. Our bedroom (room 510) & bathroom were large, clean & comfortable with plentiful hot water and a safe. The complimentary coffee/tea and pastries in the morning were great and it was very quite for the location. The hotel is a couple of blocks from Union Square and even nearer to Powel for cable cars.

Room Tip: As with all city hotels you should avoid the front rooms if you don't like a bit of noise. Our r...

We recently spent three nights at the Grant Hotel in central San Francisco.
We had a lovely large room (#516) on the top floor, with comfortable beds, large windows and a bath. Although there was only two of us, we paid a bit more for a triple room and it was well worth it.
The location is perfect for exploring the city. The trolleys cars run past half a block away, Chinatown is an easy walk, as is Union Square. Market street, where one can catch vintage buses to the Ferry building and along the bay to Fisherman's Wharf, is a bit further but still an easy and interesting walk away. It is a bit of a climb back up to the hotel on the way home though. We recommend the 3 or 7 day Muni transport pass which allows you to use all the buses, trolleys and Bart. Bus #30 was particularly useful - it passes fairly close to the hotel and goes all the way to the Praesidio park and almost to the Caltrain station below Market Street.

As said in other reviews, the breakfast was sparse, but we found it quite enough to grab some pastries and coffee before setting out to explore. There is little space to sit in the foyer to eat this, so we would fetch ours and take it up and eat it in our bedroom.
The ladies who booked us in were lovely; thereafter the various receptionists were helpful but not particularly friendly.

The Wi-fi is free in the lobby (hence no space to eat breakfast) and can be paid for in the room.

Because of the location, we could hear the city at night and rather than being a problem it was rather special. The trolley bells, the concierge's whistles, snatches of music from night clubs, odd wafts of trombone from the busker in Union square (and the odd noisy siren).

All in all we loved our stay there and would be very happy to go back again.

Room Tip: Triple room on the top floor was lovely

If you are needing a comfortable bed, a hot shower in a clean hotel and don't worry too much about decor or a view, this may be the hotel for you. Location is great, very close to cable car which will take you right to Fishermans Wharf. Easy walking distance to the bus to Fishermans Wharf if you're on a tight budget too. Italian pizza/pasta just down the road on the corner has great food. Lori's Diner, the next block down the hill has good basic food. Free wifi in the foyer worked fine. Breakfast is coffee and donuts/muffins in the foyer. It was a bit of a squeeze in the foyer on a busy day. Most of the time you eat and run anyway so no bid deal. Towels are tiny but do the job.

If you are only after an affordable place to stay in a top location go for this hotel. We were out all day during our stay so we knew we only needed a bed to stay in. My husban and 3yr old and I slept comfortably in the bed. we were on a higher floor facing the street and did not hear much noise.
It's perfectly located near Union Square, The Bart stop (though an uphill walk) the cable car stop as well. We took the BART easily from the airport and within 30mins arrived at Powell st station and walked some blocks to the hotel. The room we had had two double beds and large clean bathroom flat screen tv. Some people complained on reviews about the breakfast but if you are getting pastries for free there isnt much to complain about. Free wifi in the lobby.
Once again if you want a fancier experience go for a nicer hotel as this is the basics (no hairdryer) but apart from that it is good. Some staff members need to smile a little more

Room Tip: we didnt want a depressing view to a brick wall so I asked for a street view which was lovely - high...
