I arrived quite late at night alone to downtown San Francisco and got quite a scare as I took a wrong turn into Tenderloin, quite a dodgy part of town, which is quite close to the hostel. If you're going back to the hostel at night alone, try to steer clear of this area!! When I arrived, I entered my dorm room to find that my bed had not been prepared at all (was still messy from the last person who had stayed there, no new sheets or anything). So I had quite a bad first impression and was very nearly going to change hostels, but ended up deciding to stick with it, as the location was convenient to get around.

Ended up having a pretty good stay - the location was good, and breakfast was nice and filling in the morning, and also did a fantastic tour of Chinatown with the hostel including tea and fortune cookie tasting, temple visiting and lots of interesting history (would highly recommend it! The guide was very informative). I also biked the bridge with the hostel (which was excellent), and did a nice wine tasting.

If you prefer a more picturesque location with a nice view, go to HI Fisherman's Wharf! Bit of a trickier location but beautiful (and I imagine a bit more safe)!

The neighborhood of the hostel is pretty dangerous, better to walk on the side near Macy's. There are people who smoke in the bathroom and the smell would spread to our room, but I guess there is nothing the front desk can do about. Other than the above two points, the service is great!

Stayed here for my first few nights in America and first time in a hostel all together, needless to say I was shattered so slept like a log! We stayed in a 4 bed female dorm with a HUGE bathroom, showergel (i think!) in a dispenser on the wall, everywhere was really clean. Lots of information everywhere about things on in the area and things arranged by the hostel, breakfast is sooooo good! Just have to wash up your own things but met some really nice people in that kitchen! Eased my fears about hostels (turns out they are not all like the film) Walking distance from the BART station.

I stayed in a private room my first two nights of the week and then into a shared room.

Thank you so much to the staff for being so helpful and friendly!!!!

The location couldn't be better.. You are right in downtown. Easy to get anywhere and everywhere.

When you walk in, the place has a nice feel to it. Nicely decorated and homely and staff are lovely!!!

The private room was fabulous! Very clean and comfortable! And the bed was amazing so after being severely jet lagged, it's just what I needed.

The shared rooms are fine. Clean again and comfortable. The only little thing that didn't bother me as such but you easily wake up your roommates is... In the shower rooms, there's no sink.. There's a sink in the toilet but you can't exactly brush your teeth with the sink that is attached to the back of the toilet. So cause I got up early, you need to use the sink in the room so it would definitely be a lot easier if there was a sink in the shower room.

But the place is great. :) lovely staff, clean rooms/bathrooms, comfortable beds, central location and fabulous place overall :)
Will definitely be back when I am in San Francisco again.

I stayed here for about 10 days, with an average cost of $90 per night for a private room with a bathroom. Great location on Mason, near to the BART, Union Square, etc. Reception were helpful and friendly.

The room was fairly clean and basic, with a double bed, sink in the corner, and toilet/shower in separate small room. The hostel has good security, free bagels for breakfast (love these), and laundry facilities too. They also organise events like wine tasting evenings which I unfortunately missed.

On the downside it can get a little noisy. Bring earplugs. Also, the private rooms don't have lockers or safety deposit boxes. There is a safe at reception but my laptop, jewellery etc were fine in the room.

Would recommend.

Room with 3 other girls was just over $32 a night. If not a HI member you have a fee of $3 extra a night. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I really appreciated the fact they didn't get mad when I had to keep going in to the luggage room to get stuff I'd forgotten to take out. Never had to wait for a bathroom or shower(@ night). I'm not a breakfast person but the bagels were delicious (had apples/oranges/green bananas too). Has vending machines with snacks/drinks & tide detergent. Loved the decor and the beds were really comfy. They supplied free?earplugs which were a lifesaver since I had a moaner for a bunk mate (not a snorer but a moaner...a loud one). The activities are excellent - Did the bike trip which was a deal $18+$11 ferry tix after 6 hours I couldn't sit. The TV room had a satellite but I couldn't find anything on - careful of the sports watchers they hog it for hours. I would definitely suggest this place to anyone and have - Great location close to transit/walking distance to shopping.

Was seriously impressed with this hostel. Had everything a traveler needed to explore and relax. Great wifi connection, breakfast was awesome and it's location was prime for getting to the airport and any other areas of Sam Francisco being close to any transport. Right in the hub of union square but just a street or so off you can sleep well at night. It was clean and a really nice and safe environment. Will be the only hostel I use when visiting San Francisco.
