“Pleasant stay there !”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

What a pleasant stay there ! The hostel is very well located (just a few minutes from Market Street) and staff member are very nice and helpful ! The hostel is very clean (shared bathrooms, kitchen, rooms) and my room was quite comfortable. The street is supposed to be noisy but it didn't bothered me at all. Just one negative point, you don't have a lot of choices for the breakfast but it's still a nice place for a good price !

Thank you for the tremendously pleasant feedback! Street noise can definitely be seen as the only setback of being so centrally located. We try our best to combat this by offering free earplugs available to all guests located in our lobby and at the front desk. If other rooms are available, we're always happy to attempt to move guests to non-street facing dorms. Safe travels!

Stayed here for three nights and stayed in a 4 dorm bedroom. Welcoming staff was very rude and didn't care much for helping us or our arrival.

Room was very small and not much room for all luggage and room was full. Very basic which was surprising considering how much we paid. My bed sheets were dirty and stained, didn't feel comfortable sleeping in it. Bathroom situation was strange, two toilets and showers for each floor. Did not seem enough for the number of rooms.
Breakfast was decent, oatmeal and beagles with coffee or tea. Location was great, a small walk away from the main streets and attractions. I would recommend doing the big bus tours if you are only there was a. Short amount of time.. Everything you need to see is offered .

Was a nice hostel but definitely over priced for what was offered.

On behalf of our entire staff, I apologize you felt your experience during check-in was unsatisfactory. The last thing we would ever want any one to feel upon visiting a new place is unwelcome.

Regarding the restroom situation, each of our floors has three public restrooms and half the dorm rooms have en-suite restrooms. Unlike other hostels, we don't charge a variance for dorm rooms with a restroom or without.

The price of our dorm rooms is based on occupancy of the hostel. Hosteling International is a non-profit organization and we price our rooms to stay operational in the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco. Overall, we're glad you enjoyed your trip to San Francisco! We hope you'll consider staying with us again.

We stayed in a private room, which was a good size and had a comfortable bed, the street noise can be a bit loud at times, but that's probably why they provide ear plugs downstairs. We didn't have the free breakfast, but it's looked good - bagels and stuff like that.

We got a private en suite room. Very clean and spacious. Go for it, spend a little more to have some privacy, a view and a big toilet. Felt like a hotel, but hostel price.
Breakfast is FREE. Yummy bagels (lots of them with different flavours), fruits, cereals,...more than any other hostel will provide.
Very nice kitchen area. Very clean
oh ya, free coffee & tea 24/7!!

Free super fast wifi internet!!LOVE!! You can connect wifi in your room, not like other hostel, only in the lounge area

There is a lift for your big luggages. Staffs are forever helpful and answer all questions.

Less than 5 mins walk to Powell Cable Car, or just hop on the cable car infront H&M (jst around the corner)
1 min walk to Union Square
2 mins walk to yummy Chesse Cake Factory

Lot's of activities, but too bad we didn't have time to join any.

Right in downtown, so there is constant noise at night. Bring a power strip or a extension chord. Staff was knowledgable but not too friendly at all. Kinda got the impression that it's just bed factory. But if you want to go to all the touristy stuff it's a great reasonable spot.

Thank you for the positive recommendation of our hostel. I'm very sorry you gathered the impression that we are a bed factory, as this strongly goes against our hostel and organizational mission. We strive to make our hostel feel like a home away from home for all of our guests, and I can guarantee if you choose to stay with us again, that will be the vibe you experience.

We hope to see you again soon!

If you're traveling on a budget but still looking for nice, centrally-located accommodations this is a great option. I stayed here with a friend for four nights and had a wonderful experience. Obviously if you are staying at a hostel you shouldn't be expecting the amenities of a five-star hotel, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of our stay.

We stayed in a four-person dorm and had an en-suite bathroom as well as a sink and mirror in the room. Each bed also had a personal light and charging station which was incredibly convenient. If you aren't used to city noise you may have some trouble falling asleep just because it is in a busy area with lots of traffic.

We participated in one of the organized social events (80's bingo) which we didn't stick around at for too long, but we ended up going out with some of the other residents who attended. So anyone who is traveling solo/looking to make friends should definitely take advantage of the free/cheap nightly events.

Overall, we had a great time and would highly recommend to any budget-conscious traveler.

I joined my friends over in San Francisco, and we stayed in a six-room dorm for two nights. The Australian that stayed with us was absolutely lovely; so this place is great to meet new people.
We arrived at midnight as our plane was delayed. Our cab driver informed us that we ought to be careful as downtown can be very rough and dangerous at night - and he was certainly right.

We were greeted by a crackhead blocking the entrance, until the receptionist swore at him and literally 'shoo-ed' him off. It wasn't the first impression I was hoping for.
As I was so tired from the exhaustive plane journey, I wanted to just head straight to bed; however, the room was too humid without the windows open. When we opened the windows, all we could hear were people partying/shouting/screaming/throwing glass bottles. I can get to sleep with a great deal of noise, but if you're a person that can only sleep in silence... then this is not the place for you.

In the morning, I was hoping to get a shower. But there was weird, orange mould growing in the bath. I felt a little sick and decided to pass on the shower. As my friend couldn't get to sleep the first night, he walked through downtown and said it was the scariest atmosphere he has ever witnessed, which was unusually for him to say.

Nonetheless, the location is brilliant, the free breakfast was sufficient and the people there are lovely. The people at the reception were very informative and gave great advice.
Other than that, if you're staying longer than two nights then please stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Maybe choose a room that is not adjacent to the busy street

We greatly appreciate you leaving a full account of your experience of our hostel during your stay. We're happy you were able to meet some great people during your travels, as that is what hostelling is all about!

It's disheartening you were greeted by such an experience upon your arrival. I can assure you, these types of situations in Downtown San Francisco are very few and far between, especially in the area of our hostel (between the Nikko Hotel and Hilton Hotel).

Overall, it seems as if you had a lovely time in San Francisco and met some great people, so we're happy hear we could be the catalyst for your positive interactions.

We hope you'll stay with us again your next time around. Happy trails!
