We stayed at this hotel for a very long weekend -- Wed through Monday in June. The first two days were business for me, so I was very glad I selected this hotel/location so that the hubby could do some sightseeing on his own. The location of this hotel makes it an excellent choice for first time visitors to San Francisco.
As others have mentioned, the theme of this hotel is nautical but unlike others I do not feel that it is over the top. I find the decor very whimsical in nature especially in the rooms (not counting the hallways where you'll find HUGE anchors on the rugs lol). We had a standard king. The window looked over the courtyard; nothing at all to see except other windows and a rooftop. The condition of our room was excellent and they did a great job keeping it tidy. Bed was comfy, lots of pillows available. I did think the bed was very high off the floor, so take note short folks! Also, the height of the bed comes into play for just lounging as there was only one chaise in the room, and one desk chair. This made for uncomfortable TV viewing for one of us. I think a couch would be a great addition (but realize there was no room for one in this room).
The valet/doorman are great! They chat with you, ask about your day, and offer advice for transport and things to do. We did utilize their valet parking (very pricey at $46/day -- but this *is* San Francisco folks. Parking is expensive). Usually a very quick return of your car, always with a smile.
The lobby is just great; they have nightly wine receptions and it is very comfy to hang out in. The staff is nice as can be -- although the checkin folks have a spiel and they really talk way too fast! But, can't really complain as they were really accommodating at all times.
The location is perfect for sightseeing. All modes of transportation are right there (cable car/electric street buses, etc) plus you are walking distrance to the wharf, Pier 39, Ferry Market and many attractions.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone: families, business travelers, singles/solo's, seniors etc. It is, however, very pricey.
