This is a quality property and has matching great service. The rooms and pretty much all of the property is really nicely decorated in the overall nautical theme of the location. The location of course is great, right next to the water and some especially fantastic restaurants like Gary Danko's.

Not much else to say that hasn't already been said and that is clearly shown in the pictures. Pricing can also be quite good if you look for deals directly from them. This should be a very safe choice for a nice hotel for your trip to the city or those local wanting to spend a night or two in town.

One caveat, because the location is in the middle of things happening, there can be some noise to your room, depending on where your room is located. Ask the desk about this and if you need to not have music and festivities from around the hotel bothering you at night.

Room Tip: Ask them about room location so you don't end up on the side of the property that faces another...

Thanks so much, TripShawn! Cool yet cozy is just what we aim to be: the renovation and service philosophy here both emphasize elegance but with a casual and comfy vibe. Some of my favorite rooms overlook the East's historic Cannery Courtyard. Those are in our Deluxe category, though of course it's also fantastic to trade up to the View rooms that offer vistas of either the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. True "only in SF" experiences that continue to take my breath away!

We had a fine room (Number 358) to the courtyard. The ace of the hotel: only a few minutes far from the cable car! Close to the wharf there is life on the street but no noising traffic. Absolutely you have to visit "Fog Harbor Fish House", Pier 39. The hotel was once a factory. You have also a restaurant in the house. There you can buy sweaters the waiters are wearing. The staff is friendly as mostly the Americans we met.

Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Schweitzer, and thank you for your review! I'm happy that you loved the hotel and restaurant.
I will also have to check out that other restaurant after work one night. Usually I am just grabbing a quick lunch, in which case the fish at Codmother's food truck really hits the spot.
I hope you got to take a park ranger tour or maybe a spin through the Maritime Museum Visitors' Center here at the hotel. Both are a great way to soak up the history a bit. We are so lucky to have the unique preserved brick and beams to frame the hotel -- and the guest experience!

Love this quirky very, very nice wharf hotel. Have stayed here twice in the last 9 months. At the end of the busy wharf, so not in the craziness, but terrific location for a San Francisco visit. Upscale Nautical decor, very tastefully done, incorporating the historical aspects of the building. Should pay extra for a bay view room. Loved looking out on the Golden Gate Bridge, wharf and Alcatraz. King suite with connecting living/dining area wonderful. Bathroom large, but only single bowl sink. But lots of counter space. Join kimpton club for free wifi, water and $10 bar credit. Beds great, but can hear city noises. Didn't bother me but may some. Blue mermaid had really good breakfasts. Complimentary happy hour daily. Only issue we had was, we were a family traveling together with 3 rooms, which I requested near each other. Only put 2 near, the other was literally at the opposite end of the building as far away as it could possibly be. So kids, parents and grandparents were separate. I called few days before and they said it would be no problem, but hotel was full and couldn't accommodate us. Location to all tourist attractions cannot be beat.

Room Tip: Bay view wonderful

Hi, pjmom45!
I'm so glad you loved the hotel and of course we're lucky to have this location.
We will always try to keep families together, though with so few suites it is sometimes a challenge. I'm glad that two of the rooms were side by side, and with that killer view.
Better to look at Alcatraz than be a resident :)

Kimpton Hotels pride themselves on making customers feel welcome, and this hotel is no different. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. Our room was ready, clean and well furnished with a nautical theme. The concierge was very helpful in booking a couple of tours. The hotel was full, but the staff made us feel as if we were the only guests. The hotel is conveniently located an old warehouse next door to The Cannery in Fisherman's Wharf, and is one block from the cable car turn-around. Ghirardelli Square is a short walk away. I was travelling with my 12 yr old granddaughter. We loved our stay, and if we return to San Francisco, The Argonaut is where we'll stay again!

Well, Vagabond121, you have one lucky granddaughter! Thank you for treating her to a San Francisco adventure here with us. I hope she got to try the scavenger hunt or the infamous sparkling apple cider that kids seem to get addicted to at the hosted wine reception. They get even more excited for that than we adults do for the sangria!

We stayed here for 3 nights before picking the hire car to drive down the coast, glad we did after seeing what the charge was for valet parking!
We saw to our own bags as we don't see the need for someone to take my bags to the room when I've dragged them out of the airport and all the way to the hotel.
The room was lovely tidy and clean. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hairdryer, iron and ironing board are all provided. There is a fridge full of beer, spirits and water, a tray of goodies but all very expensive. There are 7Eleven shops in the area which are so much cheaper.
The hotel has a meet n greet each evening between 5 - 6 pm. Wine, beer, sparkling, red and white wine are served as well as Sangria with fruit in it. This is a great idea and involves those who want to socialise and pass on information regarding trips etc.
The hotel is very central and the cable cars are just around the corner, they operate between 6am to 12midnight, cost was $6 one way, $12 return or $15 all day. Top tip, go first thing in the morning, there is no queue, the sunrise is lovely and you get to sit/stand where you want to.
Go to Hollywood Cafe for breakfast in North Point Street, 2 blocks back, turn right out of the hotel and it's near the Holiday Inn. This place gets busy from 6am! Tables are available outside as well as in. Just put your name down on the clipboard when you arrive. Tables soon become available. Price, $35 for 2 with tips. Enough food is served, very fresh and will see through most of the day.
If you are going to Alcatraz, we found it disappointing, get your tickets online well before you go as we did, they do sell out and other companies on the streets will more than double the price!
Downtown is hilly and to busy, we stayed near the wharf, lots of people watching and entertainment at Pier 39.
There is a cafe at Pier 39 called Eagles Nest and they sell the most delicious prawns served in garlic and leek sauce served with bread, half a pound did both of us and was enough to put us on, this place is popular to.
If you go to this hotel, there is a free tour on Saturday and Sundays at 10.30am, it's a really good tour and history about the building and surrounding area is very interesting!!
Beware if you go out to eat as we were charged 15% service charge on a meal for 2 at the Flying Ninja Sushi bar without being told!!!!
Lots of pubs and restaurants close by, do not go to Buena Vista for an Irish coffee, costs $9 for 3 gulps and the staff are very rude.
We would like to thank Frederico at the Argonaut for his service, he was very good, patient, informative and very professional.
A little disappointed after reading other reviews who got champagne in their room for their birthday honeymoon etc and we got nothing and my husband has just completed 25 years in the British Army and served with the Americans on numerous operations !!!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Wharf or Bridge view.

Thanks so much, Scorpio40! I love your tips, but you have made me so hungry for Hollywood Cafe! Also, the chef here does an out-of-this-world bacon quiche that I like to recommend, especially with Hollywood gets crowded. I did not realize that your husband was celebrating that special service anniversary, and I definitely hope we have the chance to thank him for his service on his next stay. I hope we will see you again soon! In the meanwhile, I'll make sure to share your note with the team, particularly Federico at the front, whom we will commend on his excellent service! Cheers.

We booked this hotel last minute for our final night of our stay in California. We had just gotten engaged the prior day and I guess mentioned it at some point in our check in or booking. We were absolutely surprised that the staff sent up a bottle of champagne to our room! Such a sweet surprise! We loved our night here and loved being close to the water. We will happily return!

As part of a classic road trip we were staying in San Francisco for two days, three nights and wanted a hotel in a very central location and so chose this hotel
We were not disappointed as it met all our requirements and expectations
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome
The rooms were clean, modern and large
Location was great and for the cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39
I would recommend this hotel but be warned, car parking at $46 a day is not cheap. My suggestion? If you are doing a road trip and are starting off at San Fancisco for three or more nights then consider taking a taxi from the airport and puck up your hire car downtown on the day that you leave. As that way you will save paying a lot for parking and save the cost of hiring a car tat you will not use whilst you are there

Thanks, Simon R!
I'm delighted that the hotel checked all the boxes for you and then some! It is pretty neat how the designers modernized the space while taking great care to protect the historic exterior and beams.
I agree with you, it's great to leave the car behind when you can since San Francisco has such pricey parking. That said, if you do need to drive in, you will sometimes find discounting parking packages through our website. Take care!
