I used to play this course regularly as the overall experience of a rich and varied selection of tough par 4's, reachable par 5's and eccentric par 3's always made for a memorable experience. However during my past 2 visits during the glorious months of September and October weather, the grounds crew have decided to go beaverish! And have they been busy! All over the course there are diggers, construction crews relaxing in the sun during their lunch break, all sorts of machinery in operation chewing up branches, whole swathes of turf being aerated, signature trees being chopped down all in a seemingly never ending cycle of deconstruction, reseeding and rebuilding? All of this for 18 greens with different grass; fairways that are wet and never seem to dry; tee boxes that are uneven and poorly maintained; bunkers that are never raked and have no more than 1/8" sand; pin placements that are incorrectly marked on the scorecard despite the assurances of the starter that pin placement #1 is in effect today; holes that are taken completely out of play for more than 60 days of supposed improvement while you continuously clean the mud from your shoes and clubs in 75 degree weather?
Save your money and give it this mess a miss!

Several folks told me to skip the Presidio for golf; I am glad that I didn't listen.

Their views were ten years old, and reflected a course in the shape of a well-worn mini.

Yes, this is one of many courses in SF available for a much lower fee to residents than to us visitors. That's where the muni comparison stops.

I found that this course was well maintained, and challenging to boot. In fact 13 of 18 holes play up hill, making the 6200 yard white tees feel like they were several hundred yards longer. The layout was interesting, not overly challenging and (despite the pro's advice) walkable. In addition, speed of play for our mixed foursome on this crowded Thursday morning was a surprising 4 hours, 15 minutes.

Clubhouse offers a neat grill room with a few good local brews on tap and - this being SF-a menu that was well above average.

My only complaint for the the Presidio Golf Course? Slow greens, which seemed partially the result of the marine climate, partial the result a long cut.

A great treat to slip away from the conference with colleagues and hire some clubs for a most enjoyable afternoon on the Presidio.

As visitors to the state, the fees weren't cheap and the cost of rentals added to the cost but for a once-a-year extravagance it was well worth it, playing our own version of the Ryder Cup

Be aware that the buggies are GPS linked and if you stray too far from the path their power will cut out and you will have to push them back to the track :(

Post match analysis (lies and bragging) on the club terrace was accompanied by some very welcome chilled lagers and excellent service from the bar staff.

You definitely can tell this course is very old due the the fact that some holes are painfully close to each other. If you are traveling from out of state expect high cost. (Calif residents are reasonable) I ate a tri-tip beef sandwich, by far the best food item I have EVER had on a golf course! Traps need more sand, some were like hitting off concrete. Staff was terrific!

They staff were courteous and accommodating. The course was in very good shape. We had trouble reading the greens, but that wasn't the fault of the course. Despite the course target of 4:40 hrs. for a round, we were done in far less than that. There are several holes that are very picturesque, so there are nice things to look at if your game goes south.
