San Francisco Hotels are always interesting affairs to me. We've stayed at some of the huge convention types (don't love them because check-in is usually not good), and the regular chains...but we wanted to try the "Autograph Collection" of Marriott. It was a treat. The front staff is excellent, efficient, and attentive. The lobby has several sections that are quite nice. The bar was excellent and the bartender was quite good at making craft cocktails...the windows allow you to see what's going on streetwise.
Rooms nicely decorated. You can tell this is an old building, but they did some clever tricks with paint and light to create a very sweet hotel.
It's interesting to note that the neighborhood is changing very quickly from being pretty seedy a few years ago to gentrification. You do not need to go any further towards The Tenderloin district once you get there. Either walk North or back to Powell and Union Square. It is safe but get info from the hotel on best ways to walk in and out.
