As everything within a reasonable price range (for SF) was booked because of the World Cup, we ended up at the Aida because it was on Market Street (easy transportation) and had 2 doubles with bathroom available. Surprisingly, it was pleasant enough if you're OK with hostels. This is a historic building (high ceilings, original fixtures in lobby, moldings etc.) with minimal upgrades which involved new paint (inches thick), new carpets, beds, pictures. Bed was good, bathroom, sheets and towels were clean. Lobby was friendly with mostly European travelers. Street was noisy (if that is an issue for light sleepers). Location is great for bus, trolley and metro stations; a couple of blocks from union square and court house. Location has some homeless on semi-permanent basis. Yes I would use it again (was sooooo much better than the B&B I had tried previous year).

Room Tip: Ratings are based on a comparison to hostels rather than hotels.

Please save your money! Without telling you about the hotel even, it's a bad area. All surrounding buildings are boarded up and an insane amount of homeless people cover the street. One foot inside you will see the carpets are never vacuumed or anything dusted. Which is not the biggest issue. The stairway was covered in seed shells and other funk. Bags of trash in the hallway. The room smell made you sick. The view was another building sprinkled with trash. They refused to give even a partial refund for the conditions. STAY AWAY!

Pretty scary neighborhood for two girls traveling alone, but only two blocks away from Union square. Really great old building, very cool architecture but bathrooms were renovated out of closets so its a little out of the ordinary- not the lap of luxury but interesting! Great hotel for the price.

The bed was clean. Go to the mosser hotel on the corner of Ross it's cheaper and everything looks good is clean and you have great service. The room looked terribly depressing and there was blood in the sink.

Some very harsh reviews here I don't get. Elevator worked fine, didn't smell anything foul... Big 'old hotel' lobby with wi-fi and great Billy Holiday era soundtrack playing (the sound system in the elevator, of all places, is awesome). Room was basic but clean, bed was firm. Coffee in the lobby and yes, donuts for breakfast aren't the best. If you go to the Visitor Center across the street they have flyers with a good discount for this place (as of this writing).

Room Tip: There are rooms with bathrooms in the hall, so you might want to take a room close, or far away, as...
