A gorgeous hostel/hotel in a horrendous neighbourhood. I was pleased with the price of $180 for a private room at the last minute, but wish I’d paid more and gone elsewhere. I walked to the nearest bus stop and saw people passed out and injecting drugs on the street.
I then had to use taxis to get to/from the hotel because I felt so unsafe.
It’s such a shame because the hotel itself is fantastic. An antique lift and such details in the gothic styling of the hotel make it such a place of character.
Breakfast is included and they have a bar here too.
The room was comfortable and clean.

Thanks for staying!

I'm very happy to see that you thought we were a great value and an awesome hostel! We are! ;)

I know the neighborhood can be a lot, especially on your first visit, and I'm sorry it had such a negative effect on your experience. The Tenderloin has always been an area that offers lots of services to the most needy among us, so we're very proud to have a lovely hostel here, as it gives us lots of opportunity to feel helpful and involved in our local community.

Next time you stay, make sure to stop by the desk to chat with our diverse staff... we all have lots and lots of ideas, tips, routes, and enthusiasm for our neighborhood and city, and love to share them with our great guests. Since the TL is known for having amazing street art, cool as heck art galleries, and some of the best and cheapest food in all of San Francisco, we feel really lucky to have a hostel here. There are even volunteer opportunities for those guests that would like to spend a part of their trip helping out. It's not for everyone or for every trip, but it's a really cool way to get to know the area, and see some of the more inspiring sides of what's going on around here.

In the mean time, thanks so much for staying and taking the time to leave a review. Wishing you happy travels!
~Molly

Stayed here one night before going on a tour with G Adventures, and the details and atmosphere is awesome. Lovely staff. The hostel can hardly be blamed for their location, and they compensate it very well with bath tubs. And two pillows. In the dorms! Free breakfast and tidy and clean kitchen.

Hostel location is very central. Most popular sights in walking distance or serviced by local bus no 38 which will take you to the edge of Embarcadero or all the way to ocean beach and golden gate park for $2.75.
The neighbourhood is very challenging; but we were never hassled day or night. However the street noise level is loud until early hours. The hostel though is very safe and secure.
I have stayed at the sister hostel in mason street and inevitably have drawn parallels. The staff there were much more gregarious. Despite staying for 9 nights overall, it was difficult to build a rapport with the staff. Only one was helpful with advice and I heard them openly discussing their sales successes. Not cool.
There is a bar on site. Small range of drinks available in the evening. A strict no alcohol or food policy in the rooms.
Breakfast plentiful and a well equipped kitchen.
Very clean and tidy and a shuttle service to airport is offered.

This place is just gorgeous - the decor, the bar/Breakfast area, the communal areas, the antique elevator - and the beds are extremely comfortable and well furnished with light and usb ports. Extremely nice staff and a very well-equipped kitchen area.

The only thing I will say, and it's totally not the hostel's fault, but the area it's in is awful - dirty and over run with homeless. It's heartbreaking and I hope that San Francisco can come to terms with these challenges soon. However, the hostel does extremely well to make its guests feel secure and safe.

Hostel itself is great, clean rooms, friendly staff and a cool vibe. We felt sorry for the staff/owners as the hostel itself is perfect, you just have to beware of the location and that isn’t their fault at all. Our twin room was large and clean, breakfast was great and the dollar pancakes are a steal. There’s a large common area with plenty of couches and seperate seating areas.

The area attracts a lot of homeless people and junkies, who line both sides of the street at night. Being a larger male, I’m not really worried about them but my girlfriend did not feel safe walking in the evening/after dark so we took a lot of Ubers. We also come from a very safe/small city without a huge homeless population so if you are from a larger city you will probably feel more comfortable. Regretfully we ended up using the refunding night policy as we wanted to move closer to union square and walk in the evenings. The staff are also very good with security at night so there is no risk inside the hostel/directly out front. We also didn’t have any issues with the noise as mentioned by other reviewers, it was quiet in our room and we had no trouble sleeping.

If you are a traveler who is comfortable with dealing with homeless people at night, this hostel will be great but if you have reservations about it you would be best to look at a different area of town, or be prepared to pay for ride share services. Although everywhere in town will have issues with the homeless population.
