The Metro is a gem if you are looking to stay a bit off the regular tourist beat and are okay with few frills. The room was clean, but very basic and probably not for the overly picky hotel guest. For our needs and for the price we were willing to overlook the spartan bedding and slightly creepy shower. We had a room in the front of the building and as expected from other reviews it was noisy. What we weren't expecting was the lack of curtains over the window, just blinds, - which meant sleeping with a mask or getting a very early and sunny wakeup.

Although most travelers might prefer to stay in the center of things at Union Square or the Wharf, we absolutely loved being in the Lower Haight. There are so many great restaurants, coffee spots, and bars close by that we enjoyed our mornings and nights in. Our MUNI passports were heavily used, but the hotel is located within a block or two of several major lines.

If you are a traveler looking to stay in a vibrant, non-touristy neighborhood that is okay with basic accommodations, look no further than the Metro. This hotel isn't for everyone, but we were happy with our choice and would most likely stay again, even if they don't put up those much needed curtains.

Room Tip: Rooms in front are noisy (this is a city!) and bright in the morning.

The hotel is in the Ashbury Haight section near the bus stops. The price is reasonable and the rooms are clean. The shower was a little too small for my 250 lb frame.
Best of all was the front office staff, especially Shaena, who was absolutely fabulous. She helped us find street parking and avoid tickets and towing. You have to be aware of the times the streets are swept. She also was great in teaching us how to take the public buses everywhere. We never used the rental car except to move once because of the street sweeping days.
Shaena is a very special person. My wife and I had a few friendly conversations with her. As an example of her character: I forgot to leave a tip for the cleaning girl. We phoned Shaena the next day to charge our card and give the housekeeper a tip.. Shaena said no worries and that she would give the maid the money from a generous tip she had received from a patron.

Room Tip: Try to get a larger bathroom.

We stayed in room 112...quiet! Price is right..but this gem needs some basic upgrades to really shine! Some paint chipping, worn elements in general, & housekeeping needs improvement. Bring your own blow dryer+shower necessities....this is a no frills place. Staff is always friendly...the Metro Hotel has that hotel/hostel Vibe & is next to Ragazza Restaurant♡ with Little Chihuahua Mexican Restaurant across the street...Sweet☆☆ Convenient bus stop on corner of Page & Divisadero

Whilst this hotel was in a great spot and was nice looking, I had a miserable time. We were in room 105 and were right next to the stairs so every time someone walked up or down them all we could hear was loud thumping and creaking. Our fan above our bed would randomly start ticking and acting like it was going to fall off the ceiling in the middle of the night, which meant turning it off while we were quite warm. The worst noise was someone in the room above us, every morning from 8am to 9am doing something in their room that sounded like they were literally standing on the floor above our bed rocking back and forth so that the floor squeaked for an hour. I feel like it's not unreasonable to expect to sleep past 8am on your vacation, especially when you are in the city and not getting home 'til 11pm-ish after a long day of seeing the city.

Other than that, the area out the back is really nice, the staff were friendly (and very helpful when it came to parking/calling cabs), security is good, location is good (we loved the comic store and game store just next to it), room was clean though oddly laid out (our bathroom sink was in our bedroom right next to our bed and also extremely loud so it was impossible to get up and get a cup of water without waking my partner up). The showers are eco friendly, which whilst I care for the environment, also made my showers 10 times longer since it took me an extra 2 minutes to rinse anything off/out. And don't expect to get your head wet if you're any taller than 5"8 because the shower head is pretty low down and unable to adjust it higher.

I am genuinely not often fussy about hotels, especially at prices like these but some of the things that made our stay miserable (lots of traveling and 3 days with barely any sleep) were pretty easy fixes and things I feel shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

Room Tip: Don't choose one near the stairs, our friends also said their room at the front of the hotel was...

If you're looking for a clean bed in SF in a nice neighborhood for a good price then this is the place! We had a wonderful stay in room 108. Bring your earplugs, there is a restaurant downstairs, but we knew that and with the earplugs we had a nice sleep!
Only downside: what's up with the sweet smell in the hallway?

My husband and I liked Metro Hotel. It was clean, fairly spacious, and in a good/safe location if you want to 'feel like a local' and not stay in a touristy area. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. Free parking was a definite bonus. We would definitely recommend staying here.
Pros: cleanliness, friendly staff, location, price, can park for free!
Cons: water pressure/heat in shower was variable, no control over heat/air condition in individual rooms (this was not a huge issue but I thought I'd mention it)

Spent 6 nights here at the end if January. Tremendous value and the staff gave us recommendations for restaurants and sights that were spot on. (Shana you rock!) Great location in cool area. For people driving, lots of free street parking and only a 10 min drive to either the Golden Gate or Bay bridges. Rooms are small but functional and clean. You cannot beat this place for value. Will definitely go back.

Room Tip: We were in 108. A bit noisy on weekends since there is a restaurant underneath but never interfered...
