This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine. Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room. Ask for table 21. John Konstin you have a great location and a bar rich with history why not get an excellent meat provider? Ordered the T bone and was not very happy. Suggest you look at Allen Brothers and go Prime.

We found this restaurant by chance online while searching for a new place to try near Union Square. We stopped in around 5:45 on a weekday evening and were seated on the 2nd floor as the 1st floor was full. Although it is touted as a steakhouse, we were looking for something lighter. We split a Jack Lalanne salad for 2 and a shrimp cocktail. The salad was amazing and the shrimp cocktail had 6 huge prawns that were delicious. We were in and out in just under an hour as they really try to turn the tables. By the time we left, there was a sizable wait for dinner. We enjoyed the meal so much that we returned for a late lunch several days later. We ordered the same items, and, much to our delight, the items were cheaper on the 'lunch' menu but just as plentiful. In fact, the salad for 2 was actually larger than the portion we had been served for dinner. The waiter told us that his 'trick' was to ask the kitchen to prepare the salad on 2 plates (instead of 1 that was later split). That way, he said, the kitchen would make the salads larger so they didn't look meager on the plates. We'll return on our next SF visit. We suggest trying them for a late lunch instead of dinner (for the reasons mentioned above....and because the atmosphere is more relaxed).

I went to lunch with a couple of friends and was really surprised and pleased by the food and the atmosphere. Normally I wouldn't review a restaurant, but I had a great steak and my friend's Jack Lalanne salad was really good. Their seafood is fresh and most items on the menu are locally sourced. Back to the steak, really perfectly done, with the classic baked potato and vegetables. All fresh and perfectly cooked. I can't wait to go back and my goal is to see all the historic photos of celebrities. Really a special San Francisco place, and still a great San Francisco restaurant!

My wife had an excellent meal had John's Grill. Excellent service! I had the ribeye cooked to perfection. Wife had the red snapper. Perfect blend between butter and lemon. For dessert, I would recommend the flan. Price range $25-35. All meals come with baked potato and veggie. Wife got double veggies instead of potato.
