So pleased to visit L'Osteria again after a ten-year absence and find it to be just as delicious and just as infuriating as it was all those years ago! It is a very small restaurant, very, very small, and they do not take reservations. Knowing this, I timed our sight-seeing to be in the 500 block of Columbus at 5:30 so we could get a table. We got there about a quarter to six and got the last no-wait table! I had to wedge myself into my seat, and our waitress was in no mood to listen to us prevaricate about drinks or starters. Who cares?! I was there to share this amazing spot with a friend of mine, and it did not disappoint. Sadly, no roast pork on the Specials board--if it's ever on there, just order it. Forget the set menu!--so we had a spinich and gruyere gratin; a medly of roasted potatoes, yams, and carrots with rosemary; and pumpkin ravioli. I also had a glass of wine. (Just know they pour small here. If two or more are drinking wine you're best off getting a bottle.) We were full but still got dessert--a plate of "salami" or cookie pieces in dark chocolate and sliced like salami, and when they were out of mousse, their tiramisu, rich and boozy and perfect. Not good for large groups or family with squirmy children, but if you can manage it L'Osteria is a great place for real Northern Italian cooking. Mmm!
