From the dark wood paneling, tables and dated decor as well as cafeteria style seating - to the menu board and selections, step back into the 70's at Tad's Steakhouse in San Francisco. This review is based on their BREAKFAST Menu..... Decent Breakfast food (eggs, pancakes, toast), Good Coffee and above all.....prices from 1974. While far from fancy, (VERY FAR!) this place hasn't changed at all. If you are looking for a change from big chain restaurants ( Tad's was a large Chain at one time, there is one, maybe two left in New York City) and high priced hotel establishments put on your polyester slacks and walk over to Tad's for a greasy spoon breakfast. While the atmosphere is far from stellar, it is unique & part of the whole experience ! My Breakfast was served in under 5 minutes, fresh & hot! Plain and simple just a decent breakfast at decent prices which seems to be hard to find in San Francisco!Looking forward to trying their Bargain Steak dinner on my next visit to S.F. Overall Breakfast rating~ Very Good!

We found the whole concept of a "Broiled" steak to be bizarre as we had never heard of it before coming to America, however we decided to try Tad's.

We're not big 'fast food' people and didn't realise that it was an 'order at the counter and come back up to get your food' sort of place.

While the food was not bad, we wondered if we're meant to tip as beside the fact they received our money and actually cooked the food, there was no service.
An interesting place to try but I wouldn't go back.

If you are a budget tourist and are feed up with burgers this chain of restaurants is what you need.
1/2 chicken with an hot potato and a cold Bud will bring peace in your stomac.
It's a self service and you have to stand in line for a while but the guys are fast and nice.

I first came here in 1975 when the red flocked walls and red leather seated booths made it a bit more elegant, but you don't come to Tad's for the decor or the atmosphere, you come for a good size quality and tasty steak. It comes as you order it - medium rare for me - with a baked potato and sour cream or butter and a salad with your choice of sauces and I had an Anchor Steam Beer. There are limited wines also available.
I visit San Franciso regularly and it is rare that I do not call into Tad's and I have yet to have a bad steak. In fact I have always had a very good steak and the quality has never varied.
It was $4.95 in 1975 and the only change is it's now $14.95 and that is great value. You pay at the counter when you order and it cooked while you wait, but there is not generally a long wait. It is conveniently located in Powell near Union Square.
Highly recommended

Tads is a very convenient spot for a quick breakfast or lunch in the Union Square area. Lunch is ordered and picked up at the counter, and there is table service for breakfast, which is served until 11 on weekends. Steak sandwiches are very tasty and they will make you a great egg sandwich too.
