We stayed here in a one bedroom queen suite for 3 nights during a very busy May weekend under reciprocal club arrangement. The rooms were clean. The bathroom plumbing needs updating and there is no ventilation. Continental breakfast was good and it included free membership to the fitness/ squash courts. Location is superb as the service.Lots of memorabilia!

I just had a late night dinner and drinks with some friends at the University Club.

There is a wonderful, classic club atmosphere here, with fellow members greeting one another.

I had a caesar salad with shrimp, followed by a braised lamb shank. Both were excellent. I had glasses of several different reds from the bar's wine list, and all were excellent.

Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the fact that there is no gratuity charged.

Reviewed 28 October 2012

Was recently in San Francisco during fleet week and could not get into any of our regular hotels, so tried the University Club. Was pleasantly surprised. This is a post-1906-earthquake building at Powell and California which has been well-maintained. Rooms are as one would expect: good- sized, somewhat dated, very clean, limited storage and closet space, small but adequate bathroom. There is no air conditioning; however we were there on the hottest weekend of the year and the ventilation from open windows and a ceiling fan made the room very comfortable. At the juncture of two cable car lines, there was considerable noise which was manageable with ear plugs (on a cooler day with the windows closed it would be even less bothersome.) Good continental breakfast in a large sunny room with view is included. Adjacent parking at extra charge is available. If you are looking for a comfortable bit of SF history and do not demand the Four Seasons, this is a good alternative.

Reviewed 30 August 2012

I spent four nights at the end of August and found the aesthetics of all of the spaces to be nice.
There was only a view of the alley from the main floor. Because of the lack of a/c , windows had to be left open and even with the celing fan on the room remained too warm and loud? The roon being only one floor above the alley and lacking a safe I felt uncomfortable leaving the windows open during the day, although the cleaning staff felt comfortable opening them and eating them open during the day..
The bed is comfortable. The shower does not drain properly. Breakfast is half hearted..

I was there on business and is a very classy hotel - rooms not massive but had everything I needed for a great stay. The lobby and exterior is majestic - room was clean and decorated nicely. I would stay there again
