“Charming hotel, well located”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

We weren't sure what to expect as our booking here was a bit of a stab in the dark, but we were pleasantly surprised to find a charming hotel with lots of character, friendly service and very comfortable rooms – which included TV, free wifi, a fairly well-equipped kitchenette, but sadly no kettle or other means of making tea or coffee! The hotel is well situated, just 5 minutes’ walk from the Powell Street cable car route and 15 minutes from the BART (underground) station. Our only gripe would be with the “Continental breakfast”, which was slightly disappointing compared to other hotels we have stayed in in the US, both in terms of content (at least some cold meats would have helped) and quantity available towards the end of the breakfast times. But overall good value and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Is this you first visit to San Francisco?
You are not the 1% of the community that had huge pay check?
Are you a common people, casual and enjoy walking a bit?

Then probably this hotel will suit you well, there is nothing that can beat its value, the breakfast, free parking and also wifi.

Each room is decorated uniquely with hand drawn paintings, it feels more like small studio apartment rather than hotel

You will got walking closet, kitchen and utensils, dining table and flat screen TV, just open the window and feels the ambience of local street noise, just perfect to feel what its like to life as the local.

You will remember the room due to its unique decor, not like going to chain hotels where you cant tell the differences

Go down street and you have groceries store, restaurant, laundry, bars, basically everything!

You can walk from here to Union Square and Chinese town, the area is safe and I don't feel worry walking alone during the night

The staff also very friendly, I would recommend this hotel for sure

So why not 5 stars? Because wifi can be a bit flaky, the parking spot not always available and some people might find the room as some distinct smell from the carpet

Room Tip: Top floor, so you did not open the window and see the next building windows

This hotel is a real gem. It has been in business since 1929 for a reason. They have kept most of the original decorations and even the original elevators. The room was very clean and spacious, and even had a walk-in closet. The continental breakfast was very good, with a selection of baked goods, toast, oatmeal, bagels, tea, hot chocolate, and orange juice. Conveniently located near Union Square, and there are a number of restaurants within a block of the hotel.

I still can't believe how cheap this place was compared to everything else in the area. It's a bit worn, but I thought that sort of added to its charm :) The quick important bits: clean, good area, excellent value, friendly staff, comfy beds. Details: The rooms are huge compared with modern chain places and have an abundance of closet/storage space. Our double room had 2 walk in closets! The staff is very friendly and helpful with everything you need. Location-wise, Hotel Mayflower is pretty perfect for tourists. It's only a few minutes' walk to Union Square and the Powell Street BART station. There is a bus stop close by too, and the cable cars actually have a stop right at the corner as well! A word to the wise: the staff isn't kidding when they tell you it's an uphill walk from the BART. If you're arriving with luggage, you might want to take a cab up from the station (Uber is cheaper though!). As far as safety, it looks sort of close to the Tenderloin on a map, but I was never uncomfortable. I (mid-20s, female) would have been ok with walking by myself at night from as far as the BART, mostly because until you turn onto the street the hotel is located on, you're in a fairly crowded tourist area. There are a few other hotels on the same street, so it's not like you're wandering down a dark alley alone. If you want a slightly less hilly walk, the other streets that go toward Union Square before you get to Powell are fine during the day, but darker and more deserted at night. I'd stick to Powell for nighttime walking. The hotel is relatively quiet and the beds are comfy, so a good night's sleep definitely wasn't an issue. There was some nearby construction noise in the mornings while we were there (Aug. 2014), but it wasn't terrible, and probably could have been solved if we'd bothered to get up and shut the windows! If you're looking for a good place to eat nearby, the Italian place attached to the Drake Hotel on Powell (about 10 minutes walk) is excellent. All in all, I think this hotel is a great choice for almost any traveler. I would certainly stay here again!

Room Tip: Wi-Fi is free but spotty. Ask for a room on the 1st floor, where the signal seems to be stronger.

We had a pleasant stay in Mayflower Hotel on July 2014. The staff was really great, they gave us a map indicating all we needed, the best way to get on the places... Besides that, they gently received two packages that my husband needed to be delivered in San Francisco without charging for that. The room is spacious, it is like a small apartment, including a small kitchen (microwave, sink, plates, cups, and refrigerator) and a room to storage. Our room was on the front side of the building, at the 5th floor, but we didn't have problems with noise street (I think they have some anti-noise system on the windows). Everything really clean. The hotel is at great location to get around in San Francisco, and close to Union Square and to the Financial District. The continental breakfast was great, but arrive early in the morning, or you will have to wait until people finish. I just missed more fruits on that (they just have apples), but I know that is the American way of having breakfast... The only tricky part of our staying was the garage. It is wonderful the fact the hotel has a garage and do not charge for the using, but the entrance is really narrow. It is so narrow that we always had to the close the mirrors! And to get in or to get out, you will always need someone from the lobby to open the manual door for you, so sometimes we had to wait until they are not so busy. Anyway, we definitely would stay there again!

Excellent place to stay, rooms are great clean and well equipped. The lifts are a bit small but not a problem. Make sure you get up early for breakfast, the dining room is very small. Breakfast menu is limited to bagels toast cheese jam and boiled eggs, but this is plenty to get you going. Staff are very helpful and will tell you where to go and places to avoid.

Me and my wife stayed at the Mayflower for 5 days during Aug, 2014. The staff was very helpful and the check-in and check-out process were very fast. The location is just perfect to explore the wonderful city of San Francisco. The room was cozy and clean, one complain was the poor wi-fi signal in our room (located on the 2nd floor) it was almost impossible to connect while in the room. Other complain is related to the noise level at our room, anti-noise windows should be installed in order provide the guests a better experience.
