I am glad I ran across this scenic map online, for it is the best way to see the city. Starting early in the morning, I was able to travel and hit all major sites in the city from the Embarcadero, Coit Tower, crooked street, Presideo, Golden Gate, Chinatown and many other locations. The worst part though is that the signage is not very good, so you have to stop and look at the online map that tracks the next sight. Total drive is 49 miles, but with missing signs, especially around Golden gate Park and the Financial district with Chinatown, it is more like 60 miles trying to find your way.

Your own car at your own pace...I would recommend only doing it on a weekend...for it takes you uselessly down busy Market Street...nice that conceivably you can park and take your time to site see...if raking can be found: at twin peaks and coit tower, you couldn't find parking...no way...
Likes: the views from up atop telegraph hill and also at the twin peaks....

Cons: maps are useless....signs are often faded or difficult to find ...we got lost and missed Hight Ashbury...also missed alot in golden gate park....

Loved: the views as mentioned above...cliff house area..drive along the beach..the Presidio( go in and find the visitors center..nice displays and information)...loved the Palace of Fine Arts also...park, and walk totally around the buildings there. Awesome restoration...mammoth buildings of the 1915 worlds fair

The 49 mile scenic drive is a very nice introduction to San Francisco for those with a car. It includes quite a number of scenic spots outside the city that are not included in your average tour, like the coastline and the beaches south of the city. And if you like a spot, you can get off and spend some time there.

The only complaint is that the signage is less than perfect. Make sure to bring a good map to bring you back on track when taking a wrong turn due to a missing / inconclusive sign.

All in all definitely recommended.

We had a rental car in SF and decided to take the Scenic 49 mile drive on our 3rd and last day in SF. This is a fantastic way to see the city as each of the SF neighborhoods is very different. The only complaint I have of this "tour" is that the information center located at Union Square does not have a recent map and description of the places you see along the route. Their map is from 2009 and only covers the first 15 miles. This is something the city of SF should look into updating, as the google map on our iPhone took us on the route, but didn't give us descriptions on what we were seeing. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a car in SF and wants to see the entire city.
The only thing missing from this tour which we added was the crooked street on Lombard. Plan to go there early, as the lines really get long.

This was a fun thing to do that allowed us to see the highlights of the city. We went on a Sunday morning which I would recommend because we had very little traffic. We did do all 49 of the miles but still felt like we saw the majority of things needed to be seen.
