My wife and I stayed at Hotel G while on vacation from 7/11 - 7/16/2014 based on its location, introductory rate, and website photos. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and knew going in that they were still under a soft opening and would not have certain amenities such as a restaurant, bar or gym facilities. In all fairness, why people would skewer this hotel for the temporary lack of those amenities when they should have known that with just minimal research, is beyond me.
First, the good/excellent. The location, one block off of Union Square, is fantastic. Access to all public transportation is either right outside the door (bus), one block down (cable cars), and BART, Muni light rail and the historic streetcars, about 4 blocks away. There are many restaurants within an easy walk of the hotel and the shopping around Union Square is great. The service was great, with the staff aways being friendly and accommodating to us. The bed (great king) was so awesome, we even asked what brand it was when we checked out (Beautyrest). The rooms were always clean when we returned each evening and we had two fresh bottled waters on all but one day (we called them up to let them know and within 5 minutes had our waters). Our room was spacious and we had good views over Geary St. from our 11th floor location. We never had problems with street noise or from the elevators, which a number of reviewers have complained about. I'm sure being as high up as we were helped in that regard. Also, we always had the A/C unit running (you can adjust the temp), and that drowned out any potential annoying noises. The wall-mounted flat screen TV was very nice as was the little sitting area with a sofa and table.
Now, for the not so good. The main entry floor tile was a little rough and old looking and some tiles were missing. It seems like they probably should have renovated the main lobby floor first since first impressions in the service industry are so important. The lobby artwork was very nice and colorful and added to the otherwise sterile lobby. I'm sure it will look a lot better when they're finished. They do make up for that with the friendly staff. The room style, while very attractive to many, is really not our style. Very modern, with concrete floors, except for under the bed area. We knew this going in, so really it's our fault for not liking the style, as the website photos clearly show what the rooms are like. The ceiling-hung lamps on each side of the bed - while modern, were a little annoying when pulling the chain to turn them on/off - it seemed like you were about to yank them from the ceiling. The bathroom was small, but serviceable, except for the very small shelf above the sink, which is not big enough really to hold anything except a couple of toothbrushes and a few small toiletries. Also, with it being so close to the sink, it was a bit in the way while my wife was washing her face each evening. This was just a minor issue. We had no problems with water pressure.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, with the few exceptions noted. When they're fnished with the renovations, by the end of summer we were told, I'm confident the hotel will be great, especailly for those who like chic, boutique style hotels.
