Hotel G San Francisco

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 July 2014

My wife and I stayed at Hotel G while on vacation from 7/11 - 7/16/2014 based on its location, introductory rate, and website photos. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and knew going in that they were still under a soft opening and would not have certain amenities such as a restaurant, bar or gym facilities. In all fairness, why people would skewer this hotel for the temporary lack of those amenities when they should have known that with just minimal research, is beyond me.

First, the good/excellent. The location, one block off of Union Square, is fantastic. Access to all public transportation is either right outside the door (bus), one block down (cable cars), and BART, Muni light rail and the historic streetcars, about 4 blocks away. There are many restaurants within an easy walk of the hotel and the shopping around Union Square is great. The service was great, with the staff aways being friendly and accommodating to us. The bed (great king) was so awesome, we even asked what brand it was when we checked out (Beautyrest). The rooms were always clean when we returned each evening and we had two fresh bottled waters on all but one day (we called them up to let them know and within 5 minutes had our waters). Our room was spacious and we had good views over Geary St. from our 11th floor location. We never had problems with street noise or from the elevators, which a number of reviewers have complained about. I'm sure being as high up as we were helped in that regard. Also, we always had the A/C unit running (you can adjust the temp), and that drowned out any potential annoying noises. The wall-mounted flat screen TV was very nice as was the little sitting area with a sofa and table.

Now, for the not so good. The main entry floor tile was a little rough and old looking and some tiles were missing. It seems like they probably should have renovated the main lobby floor first since first impressions in the service industry are so important. The lobby artwork was very nice and colorful and added to the otherwise sterile lobby. I'm sure it will look a lot better when they're finished. They do make up for that with the friendly staff. The room style, while very attractive to many, is really not our style. Very modern, with concrete floors, except for under the bed area. We knew this going in, so really it's our fault for not liking the style, as the website photos clearly show what the rooms are like. The ceiling-hung lamps on each side of the bed - while modern, were a little annoying when pulling the chain to turn them on/off - it seemed like you were about to yank them from the ceiling. The bathroom was small, but serviceable, except for the very small shelf above the sink, which is not big enough really to hold anything except a couple of toothbrushes and a few small toiletries. Also, with it being so close to the sink, it was a bit in the way while my wife was washing her face each evening. This was just a minor issue. We had no problems with water pressure.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, with the few exceptions noted. When they're fnished with the renovations, by the end of summer we were told, I'm confident the hotel will be great, especailly for those who like chic, boutique style hotels.

Room Tip: Higher floor, away from the elevators.

Located one block from Union Square! Contemporary, boutique style. Newly remodeled. Very clean. They are still in a "soft opening" phase so some work going on but nothing that disturbed or disrupted our stay. The staff was very helpful with a few requests, directions and recommendations. Was concerned about street noise but we had a room in the back of the building and it was very quiet. Slept well!

Visited The Hotel G and it was our first vacation in San Francisco. Clearly they are still brand new and some areas are not built yet. We are lucky and grateful to get an upgrade to a 12th floor suite.

Check in - quick and easy, the staff is very professional and very friendly. Josh is awesome!

Room - Big but no carpets or place mats. The floor was concrete which I found odd. Obviously we are on vacation and only in the room to sleep. It is clean and they did a great job cleaning up daily. Plus we had an espresso machine which rocks. Only negative thing about the room is the bathroom was rather small and the toilet seat was right next to the shower door. You had to squat sideways. Real annoying!

Location: PERFECT!!! You are walking distance to Union Station, you can catch the powel street trolley on the corner.

Service - As I said was excellent, the staff was very freindly all around and always ready to help you with all of your questions.

The Hotel G is a great place and I would love to come back and see the hotel once it is completed.

I stayed at Hotel G for 3 nights for business when my usual "name brand" choices near Union Square were booked or over expense account budget for this trip. I was very pleased with Hotel G. A great location on Geary in the hub of Union Square. The staff was welcoming and professional. My room was spacious and well appointed. A very nice coffee bar and snacks for purchase in the room. A large screen tv and stereo system. And a generous walk in closet with safe. Bathroom was small, in particular the sink, but a minor complaint. Now, the "G" has no other amenities other than a very small lobby and check in desk. It appears that they were still working on a small lounge/bar area that was not yet open. I will definitely stay again, if the rates are competitive.

we enjoyed our stay. all the staff was freindly and courteous the room was clean and well maintained . the housekeeping staff were inconsistant in what amenities to leave in the room .ie.shampoo ,cofee , complimentary water. the front desk staff assited with on line check in for our flight due to the lack of a public computer & printer.

I am really pleased that I stayed at Hotel G. They offer exactly what they say they do.
Some things that stood out to me were:
- funky interior design
- super comfortable beds
- beautiful bathroom products
- blinds that block out ALL light (heavenly for jet lagged travellers)
- BRILLIANT location right near Union Square
- WELCOMING staff - always greeted me nicely
Like many hotels, you can hear noises in rooms around at times. But nothing ever bothered me. The corner section of the hotel is still being renovated but in my room (406) I never heard any construction noise.
Definitely give this hotel a go.

on our 3 night stay we chose this hotel because of it's great pre-opening rate. We loved the staff always so nice and friendly. We arrived early in the morning before the check in time and the staff was nice enough to have a room ready for us. Although the room was not big we had enough room to move around. The bathroom was beautiful with a very nice walk in shower. There were no mats on the floor of the shower so you had to be careful, it was slippery. Water pressure was not so great either, when we made a comment to the staff they explained the drought California is going thru so we left it at that. We took advantage of their valet parking, well worth it since traffic is a nightmare. over all great location and friendly staff.
