This isn't your blockbuster exhibit-type museum; in fact, it's really easy to miss. But if you like photography, with the space and time to examine closely and linger, Pier 24 is amazing. You need to go to their website to sign up for a viewing appointment, and they're not open on the weekends, but there's no admission charge and at most, there are 24 people at a time wandering the 20 or so galleries, so you really can just go at your own pace. You can even hear the occasional seagull flying overhead, it's that calm. The current exhibit has the theme "A Sense of Place" and includes historic photographs on loan from SFMOMA, which is closed for renovations. Pier 24 is a nice walk along the waterfront from the Ferry Building.
