“Not the worst, not the best place in town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2008

The hostel have pretty strange population, but in fact, the rooms are pretty fine, very kitch but ok. The neighbourhood is really cool, mission street is the south-american neighbourhood, not so far from town if you're ready to take the bus. I think the BART station on mission @ 16th may be a bit scary during the night, but the others places of mission are really ok. If you're a traveller who isn't too scared and used to poor nieghbourhoods, this hostel may suit you. I think backpackers are really used to this kind of place.

Just be careful with the owner of the hostel, he used to say all the time that the hostel is full, the website too, but the hostel seems to be empty quiet all the year. And he's used to rise his prices with strange and unknown taxes. Maybe better to come there and book directly at the hostel when you arrive.

If you want an hostel with more backpackers from all the world which is about 23$ per night per person, try the Elements Hostel just next to this one, a bit further south on mission street. The quality of services are much much better.

Don't trust all the frightening advices or the too good ones. It's just a strange hostel and a really nice neighbourhood.

ok, I suppose this review might be a little unfair as I didnt actually 'stay' here because when I arrived I was so disgusted by the run down dump I quickly collected my bag and went! The guy on the front desk was nice, pleasent and friendly but the place stunk of stale fags and is more of a homeless shelter than anything else. The area is pretty rough too, with 'Easy Money', 'Quick Money', and 'Early Payday' loan signs all the way down the street. The area seems to be the dive of San Fran. I felt unsafe and trusted my instincts and buggered off as soon as I could. Dont bother staying anyway in Mission street ...... The place is cheap'ish but I went and paid $40 more per night and got a really, really good proper hotel right in the middle of San Fran - Union Square... Perfect!

booked this hostel through hostelbookers. Its way out of town in a terrible area which i would never go out at night.
I couldnt get in the front door because nobody answers it. I had to wait until someone was coming out to let me in.
The manager couldnt get the value of the room sorted on is credit card machine. didnt understand english very well. After 10 minutes I left and found another hotel. I never even botherd to look at the rooms. Just looking at the reception area was enough for me. I wouldnt let my dog stay there.

Stayed April 2008

The El Capitan is an excellent place to stay if you want a safe, basic, clean, clean, safe environment; not if you want the latest furnishings and hi tech comforts. The building itself is from about the 1920s; it's quirky, old, everything inside is well-used, and nothing matches, but it's all ruthlessly clean - no sign of any indoor wildlife or damp, etc. We had our own sink, with a shared bathroom; our TV worked fine, but was from about 1978. There is a concierge on duty 24 hours, and they were always helpful with good local knowledge and information. Security's also very good. The neighbourhood is great too, almost entirely made up of busy Hispanics, Orientals and Greeks, not the drug adicts and dealers of some parts of the city; there are lots of good, cheap restaurants, friendly laundrettes, and a good internet cafe. The 14 bus runs up Mission from downtown San Francisco and stops right outside the hotel. We paid $20 a night each, which was terrific value for a clean, safe, no frills place to sleep.

  • Liked — Value, security and cleanliness
  • Disliked — No sink in the bathroom, just in the room, and no kettle
