“Great location! Bare minimum hotel.”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

Herbert is located centrally on Powell, right next to the cable cars and BART. Location-wise it is perfect for those tourists who want to be close to the Powell shopping areas and Union Square.

The hotel itself is quite basic. The room is minimal: a bed, a chair, a TV (for which I could not find the remote), closet, and one-person-sized bathroom. If you are looking for something fancy or even a little bit classy, this is not the place. (The bathroom is so small that they place the bath towels on the toilet! Not happy.) There are many other options in walking distance that are around the same price and have better aesthetics. If you don’t mind the bare minimum though, it should be good enough.

Keep in mind, if you have a room near Powell street, you will hear the traffic and people through the night and early morning.

Thank you so much for choosing to stay at The Herbert Hotel! We are so glad that you enjoyed being in the heart of Union Square! As for the bathroom, I am deeply sorry about the towels being placed on the toilet. That is not something that usually happens and we are definitely looking into what happened. I also apologize about the television remote. The front desk staff can gladly help you find the remote, get you a new one, or replace the batteries for you. We are at the Front Desk 24 hours a day. Once again, thank you for staying with us, and we hope to see you again if you come back to San Francisco!

I stayed in one of the renovated rooms on the 7th floor, away from the nosy street.

I enjoyed the clean, no none-sense decor, the spacious room with high ceilings, the bright windows, the clean, white linen and towels.

The room has a kettle, ironing board, and free internet. The private bathroom has a tub and a window, which give it an airy feel, despite the small size.

I understand that not all floors are renovated. So best to ask in advance.

First off, Carly at the front desk was wonderful. Very kind and helpful. Fantastic location and our room was quiet - did not face main street. Bathroom was clean.

Now for the bad: Blood on mattress pad, hair on floor, walls dirty (dusty, stained and paint chipping), sink didn't drain well and the quite possible the worst part was whatever filth was on the ironing board cover. We paid over $300 for one night and it was a trainwreck. I saw some comments about "renovated rooms, etc" - only one floor out of 7 has been renovated and it's the 7th floor (so get a room there!!). We were on the 6th floor and I hope it's next to get a makeover. I researched many hotels on Trip Advisor and now I can't believe some of the comments. Makes you wonder sometimes who posts....!

The good news is i stayed for only one night - the bad news is that my wife had two more nights at this place. We stayed a the OPAL in SF and for half the price it's so much nicer. It is not a better location but close to the Trolley and other public transportation. Oh and very clean.

I just can't imagine staying at the Herbert again. For over $300 I expect clean. I don't expect top notch services or free valet. But hey more than one pillow for each person would be great. And no blood please.

The homeless people are not an issue. The area is so busy that i can't imagine safety being a main concern for anyone.

Room Tip: Per staff, 7th floor has been renovated. Or for a better room, go elsewhere.

First of all I am so sorry that your stay was not ideal but I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the service and location of the Hotel. As for the cleanliness of your room, this does not reflect at all what we want our guests to experience and it is regretful that this was the impression left on you of our standards. This is definitely being followed up with by our Housekeeping team and management to see where the fall apart was. As you have noticed most of our scores for cleanliness are very high so this definitely not the norm but we thank you for the feedback as we want everyone to have a positive stay at the Herbert.
In regards to our renovation, all rooms have been renovated, not just the 7th floor, I am sorry if this was conveyed to you incorrectly but all guest rooms in the Hotel have been fully renovated. We do hope you stay with us again and do give us the opportunity to make a much better impression!

When we first started looking for hotels for a long weekend in San Fran, we found most to be a little high. However, we got a good deal at Herbert and definitely were not disappointed. It is close to the Bart and other forms of public transportation, which we found very helpful. This hotel is no frills at all, it is literally just a TV, bed, bathroom and a couple other basic amenities, but what else can you really need? In San Fran, you really shouldn't be in your room much anyways!

We did have an issue the first night with the location of our room. It was directly facing the busy Union Square street. We could clearly hear the trolley's and people yelling outside our window at all hours of the night, so I would definitely request the other side of the building if possible. However, the staff was very accommodating and moved our luggage to a different room for us while we were out for the day.

If we had to do it again, we probably would have stayed closer to the water since we spent most of our time there. Getting around can be a pain at times and we did a lot of walking! However, we found those hotels to be much more expensive. For the money, I think that Herbert is a good value!

Great, central, clean hotel on Powell. Bright white-washed rooms, clean white linens and immaculate albeit small bathrooms. No lack of basic amenities: in-room kettle with tea and coffee, iron and ironing board, large TV, plenty of fresh towels. Many rooms have views.

Above all, all taxes and fees were included in the reservation total amount so the price quoted was the price I paid. Nothing hidden.

I will definitely come back to the Herbert if the rates remain competitive.
