I spent 3 nights at The Herbert Hotel mid-May this year. I have stayed there twice before as it is conveniently right in the middle of town near Union Square and travelling solo I feel safe in that area. The first time I was delighted with the room and price but this year I was disappointed as the price has increased a lot from last year (to almost $300 CDN) and is not as well-kept as my previous visits, with needed repairs - see photos. Young staff is adequate but could be friendlier.

Room Tip: Book early and ask for a better Deluxe room. You'll need ear plugs! Young staff is adequate but could be friendlier.

No complaints with this hotel. Guys on the desk were very helpful when there and in communication before arriving.
Had queen deluxe room which was good size and comfortable.
Fantastic location.
The Bartlett Hall for dinner and breakfast was very good.

We stayed here (two brits) for three nights on the first leg of a whistle stop tour around the Western side of the USA.

Firstly when you land at the airport take the underground/train from the airport to Powell Station, the train service is called the BART costs 10 dollars per person takes about 20minutes.

When you arrive at Powell station exit the station and walk up the hill past Burger King on your left and you will arrive at the hotel in about 5-10minutes.

We checked in with ease the member of staff on duty answered all of our questions including WiFi local maps etc.

We chose a room which had a bathroom some rooms on our floor shared a bathroom on the same floor which would have been cheaper but we preferred our own bathroom.

The room was a bit clinical it reminded me of the type of room you would be put in having had an operation in a decent hospital. It was very clean and had everything we needed including soaps/shampoo AC, a tv, fridge, iron and board, hairdryer, hanging area for clothes, a window that opened etc. The room quiet but we could here the day to day city noise with the window open, exactly what you would expect being in the centre.

Location wise the hotel is on Powell Street which is a major shopping street with a H&M opposite and a useful supermarket next door ideal for breakfasts, room snacks etc.. The BART station is back down the hill and can take you anywhere we went to watch a ball game it was ideal.

The cable car which is useful but also a tourist attraction stops outside and can take you to Fisherman’s wharf for 7 dollars a person.

We recommend the Herbert hotel as an ideal base for exploring SAN Francisco in order for the hotel to gain five stars instead of four it would have to be a touch more luxurious but for what we paid we where happy.

The bed was extreamly small. Although in San Francisco the temperature of the room was unbearable. You could not open the window because of how loud the streets were. It was by far the worst room we have ever stayed in while visiting the city.

If this room was free I’d suggest paying for a room elsewhere. Not to mention the tv was if watching television from 1989. There was not one clear channel out of the 5 lousy channels they give you. Horrible!
