“Fantastic location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2010

Walk out of the hotel, turn right and you're in Union Square. Walk left, you're at the bottom of the Powell and Mason tramline that runs to Fishermans Wharf. So, if location is what you're after, this is first rate. It is what you will be paying for though. The rooms are nice enough but nothing spectacular; we didnt have a shower curtain which was annoying but were only staying for one night and were too tired to complain. The breakfast was a bit meh, toast and cereal and some sweet muffins but compared to hotels I paid half the price for in the middle of nowhere it didnt really compare. That being said, you get what you pay for, and if you're only staying 1-2 nights you're not going to be in the hotel much anyway - is a good cheap place to crash out.

We stayed for 3 nights at The Stratford and found the hotel to be quite small, with the world's slowest elevator. The room was average - very small, with the basin out side the bathroom, next to the bed. Had trouble trying to open two large suitcases on the floor. Free WI-FI would have been nice, but you have to pay for it. Breakfast is very basic, cereal, granola, muffins & bagels, with drip-filter coffee. Thought we paid a litle too much for what we got, but the location is why I will recommend it. Step outside the front door and you are right in the heart of Union Square with it's cable cars, shopping, and restaurants. Highly recommend Lori's Diner on Powell Street if you want a traditional American 50's Diner with over 100 beers on tap.

The hotel is nothing special. It was my second time here. The room was worst than the first time. Heating didn't work. Still, it is clean, decently priced and the location is just perfect: 30 meters from Union Square. If I will go back to San Francisco I will go to the same place. Very good for singles and couples, I would doubt is good for a family but I haven't seen the larger rooms.

Great place to stay in San Fran, staff were really friendly and helpful, made reservations for us for dinner and then checked later for us to see if it was BYO. The room was small, breakfast was extremely basic, but the sheets and towels were great quality and we had everything we needed.

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights at the beginning of a 5 week trip. We found the hotel just perfect for location. We were able to catch the BART from the airport and have a short walk to the hotel. The room was perfectly sized and very clean and comfortable. A perfect place for exploring the city. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Complimentary breakfast was good - cereal, toast and pastries. Again, ideal for quick and ease. Would definitely recommend as a hotel for exploring the city. A no frills place but perfect for us in terms of location and being comfortable and clean.

My boyfriend and I just got back from San Francisco and totally enjoyed our stay at the Stratford on the Square! I like 5 star hotels, he likes hostels...and our compromise on this hotel made us both pretty happy.

The location right on Powell is fantastic, really made us feel like we were in the thick of things with the cable cars going by right outside. Nice to be able to walk to restaurants, bars, shopping and the Bart station. The area itself felt very safe. I know from past visits to the city that you can suddenly find yourself in a less than desirable area by simply turning a corner. We walked for blocks and blocks around the hotel and felt comfortable.

The hotel itself was charming. The desk staff were always friendly and quick to help if we wanted directions or anything of the sort. I loved the tiny slow elevator (felt like I was in a tiny hotel in Europe!). Loved the staircase even more! We used it a lot, my calf muscles enjoyed the workout and we loved how it looked with the painted white cast iron railing that you could see winding all the way up to the top floor. The breakfast was good but basic and the breakfast room clean and sunny.

Rooms? Ours was pretty small. If we didn't have the desk chair positioned just so we would almost get stuck coming out of the bathroom. There was a couple spare feet to walk between the door and the bed and that's about it. Really, I didn't care. We weren't there to live out the rest of our lives, just a place to sleep on our trip. We had requested a room with a king bed, I think if you ask for 2 doubles the rooms are a bit bigger. I managed to sneak a peek inside a couple of double bedded rooms when they were being cleaned and they did seem more spacious. Anyways, our room was clean and comfortable even if small. For the price we paid and the location of the hotel, the lack of space is not an issue.

Tips while you are there? Get yourself a San Francisco City Pass. It includes transportation on most of the city's buses, street cars and trolleys for the duration of the pass as well as admissions to things like the Museum of Modern Art, aquarium, boat cruise, Academy of Sciences, etc. It's worth it even just for the convenience of transportation alone. Also, park yourself at the Golden Nugget bar one afternoon. It's right across the street from the Stratford, might look a little sketchy from the outside but inside it's great with tons of beers on tap, $3.50 margarita specials until 8:30pm and then after that a live band playing lots of cover songs that you will want to sing along to after all the margaritas.

Right in the center of town and very handy to the train station etc. Yes it has the worlds slowest lift but got fit using the stairs. Very tidy room and hotel. Free Breakfast was basic but was a good start for the day. Would recommend that you try not to get a room facing the street as the trams are very noisy. We were on the top floor at the back and it was very quiet. A tip for the trams: get on/off outside the hotel (you will have to push) rather than wait in the big lines at the end of the stops.
