“Lovely boutique hotel in convenient location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2008

Having stayed at the Argonaut on a previous trip, we were interested to see how the Tuscan would compare. It did not disappoint and cost less for our 4 day stay. The location is fantastic - a 5 minute walk to the Wharf and close to bus and trolley stops.

Having read previous reviews, we requested a courtyard room. We were given a room on the 4th floor with a view of a partially constructed building. We were not not concerned about the lack of view as we did not intend spending much time in our room but we did wonder whether there would be any early morning noise. Our concerns were unfounded as we did not hear a sound.

The room was a nice size and beautifully furnished. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean with a nice selection of toiletries. There was a fully-stocked fridge with snacks and drinks. Although we didn't use it, there was free Internet access in the room. We did however make use of the PC/Internet access available in the lobby without cost.

The staff at the front desk could not have been more helpful and whilst we did not avail his services, the concierge always seemed to be busy with guests giving info and advice.

The wine reception is a good way to wind down at the end of a busy day sightseeing and also to meet and share experiences with other guests. There was also a gentleman offering massage at this time and we met a few people who had enjoyed his services.

Upon checking-in, we were told that we would receive complementary continental breakfast for each morning of our stay. We do not usually rate these well but this was really nice - a large dish of fresh fruit, croissant or a muffin, juice and coffee. We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant (Cafe Pescatore) one night. The food and service were both excellent.

The only negative point was that when we booked our airport transfer through the hotel, we were charged $10 more than the going rate.

All in all, we would recommend a stay at the Tuscan and would definitely stay there again.

The hotel was nice. The rooms were nice. No complaints. Close to public transport and walking distance to restaraunt. This was probably not the best pick for us as we don't like tourist areas and Fishermans Wharf if one big tourist service. The food and drink prices in the area were outrageous.

Summary: best place to stay in a tourist trap. Especially if you don't have a car.

I originally requested a courtyard room but since we checked in around 11 a.m. the front desk person said one would be available around 3 p.m. but they had a 4th floor room facing the street available immediately. I am a very light sleeper so I’ll admit I was apprehensive about having a room facing the street.

We were pleased that the room was very nice and a decent size for the three of us plus it had a great view of Coit Tower, the Transamerica building and a partial view of Alcatraz through the bay window. The street noise can get loud but we already knew it would be since it IS a street-side window in a busy tourist area. I also brought a sound machine which pretty much drowns out most of the annoying noises so I did manage to sleep very well.

The mini fridge was filled with the snacks & drinks but we rearranged things so we could put our own bottles in there. The fridge made no noise at all, the a/c worked fine although we only used it once because it was cool enough for us.

Our 11 year old son said that the sofa bed was not comfortable but that is normal for most sofa beds and he slept soundly every night anyway. Our king size bed was comfy, but I thought it should have had king sized pillows as well instead of three standard size ones. The lighting was good which my husband really appreciated because he did a lot of reading during our down time.

The bathroom was an adequate size. The sink area is a bit small but there is a small glass shelf above the toilet and one shelf under the sink where hotel towels and a blow dryer are stored but there is enough room for a couple of toiletry bags. The bath has one of those large rain shower heads which we loved and it was so quiet too! The shower curtain rod curves outward to allow more “elbow” room which we really liked.

As most hotels in the city, parking is expensive so unless you really need a vehicle it’s cheaper to just buy a MUNI Passport during your stay.

There is a nice clock/radio which also has a CD player. We couldn’t figure out how to change the time on it so we just called front desk to request a wake up call each morning.

The hotel is charming and comfortable, and the staff is great. The location is hard to beat with a Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Borders, World Market and the cable car all within a block of this hotel. Pier 39 is just a short 5-10 minutes away. We were sort of sad to leave as we transferred to another hotel at Union Square for the second part of our stay. If we were to stay in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, I would absolutely stay at the Tuscan Inn again!

This was a wonderful Hotel. After reading some of the bad reviews, we started to worry about staying here. Our worries washed away the moment we reached the hotel. The staff was amazing, and went out of their way to help us. The coffee and treats in the moring was amazing. The wine and treats at night were great also, nice touch. We took the advice from other reviewers and requested a court-yard side room. Glad we did, it was very quite. Some say the rooms are small, but ours wasn't that tiny. A normal size hotel room compared to other hotel rooms we have stayed in, besides we didn't spend much time in the room when there is so much to do around San Francisco.
I will stay here again if I ever get the chance to go back to San Francisco.

This hotel is in a convenient location. It is within walking distance to the wharf, as well as the pier that sails boats to Alcatraz. There are many public transportation options including the cable cars, the trolley line and bus service. It is within easy walking distance to China town and sits within the City's Italian neighborhood. The hotel is across the street from a Dollar rental car drop off, so you can rent a car at the airport, tour the area and then drop the car off when you get into the city. The hotel does have parking, but it is expensive and hard to get around the city while driving. The hotel itself had attractive common areas. The rooms were small, very small. They were, however clean and well equipped. The staff at the hotel more than made up for the tiny rooms. They were extremely helpful and would go out of their way to meet your every demand. The Consigliore was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel to stay at where the staff will make your tour of their city a good experience, this is it.

My wife and I stayed two nights to kick off our honeymoon. The staff was very friendly and we really enjoyed their dinner recommendations. The hotel was clean, and the evening wine hour was a nice touch. The parking was steep (over $40/day after taxes), so if I had to do it again I would have parked 1/2 block north for about half of that. Overall, we would highly recommend this hotel as it is two block from the warf, dining, etc. M&M

I am not a hotel snob - I don't mind a little noise, a little bit of dirt, etc. , but given the fairly strong review for this place, I was very disappointed.

First, from day one our bathroom had a urine smell that never went away. Otherwise the bathroom was decent enough - decent temperature and decent water pressure.

The room was loud loud loud. We were on the fourth floor and could literally hear conversations on the street, with our windows shut. The ac did not seem very accurate or effective and do not book a room with a sleeper sofa. Don't get me going on the noise the fridge made - it sounded like a jet plane every time the motor shifted. I finally had to buy sleeping pill across the street to try to sleep through all of this.

Then my last morning, I got to hear a heated argument between the reception desk and the police. The police were investigating something that had happened and staff would not cooperate so the police got very annoyed...all this in front of guest.

On a positive note, we did like having a Trader Joe's right behind the hotel and used the mini bar to store our goods.l also enjoyed the morning coffee in the lobby and the free wine. But not enough to every bring me back here.
