“Mediocre worn hotel in touristy area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2014

Travelled as a couple and booked the Tuscan Hotel months in advance reading the mostly good to great reviews about it. It turned out that the Tuscan, like so many other San Francisco hotels, is an old hotel that is way too pricey compared to the standard. The area at the fishermans warf is not a place you want to stay for more than a couple of days as it is probably the most touristy area in all of san francisco with mostly uninterresting tourist shops and it is practically dead after 7 pm when everyone heads for the great places downtown. It has the piers and harbour in its favour, but you could easily go here on a day trip from downtown like most other people do and then you wouldn't feel like its a place you want to keep coming back to. Also this hotel seems to attract mostly people 50 years old +, so if you are a young couple I would look for something else.

The hotel service and staff is friendly and nice, but the rooms are nothing special and the furniture is old, worn or cheap. I accidentily unveiled a table cloth to find the table underneath was made of badly put together mdf-plates, where it was obvious the cloth covered the entire table to the floor to hide the table itself. The beds and sleep quality is fine, but if you think you're getting value for money or is looking for a nice stylish place to stay in a good location I would recommend another hotel downtown. The hotel had some wine tasting that seemed nice when we passed by it, but since we were on holiday we didn't use this opportunity as we wanted to experience the local places around San Francisco instead. The free wifi was good, most places downtown has this too or you can easily get reception to a free wifi hotspot.

The hotel also had a service where if you waiver the daily room cleaning they will give you a 5 $ coupon each day you can use in the hotel restaurant. We used this opportunity thinking we would spend the coupons on the day of our departure, only to find out you can only use 1 coupon pr. day and at 11 am when we were about to depart the restaurant was closed. No one informed us about these limitations, and we got the idea this was a feature for the hotel to save money as the coupon had so many limitations and only made our impression of the hotel worse.

All in all we would not stay here again as you can get much better value for money elsewhere. We paid 2100 $ for 6 days which would normally compare to a higher standard 4 or 5 star hotel in most major cities, but then again it seems typical of San Francisco that the hotel standard is bad compared to the price.

Hi Johnoc83 - Thank you for taking time to share your experience and observations about our hotel. I am sorry to hear that your experience at The Tuscan Hotel was not what you had hoped. No question that you have come to the single most popular tourist area in San Francisco and it is indeed more expensive to stay at the Wharf. We’re also one of the top 10 tourist attractions in all of the United States. While I appreciate your kind words, we’re disappointed that you were disappointed. We do try to price the hotel very competitively with similar hotels in the area and we believe that we offer a better value than our Fisherman’s Wharf neighbors.

Our hotel is planning to continue our facelift early 2015 and will be in the process of refreshing guest rooms, corridors and some exterior areas to provide our guests with the finest personal service and facilities. Our goal is to ensure that each and every guest enjoys a warm, relaxed, yet fun and fabulous ambience and your feedback helps us to do just that.

Again, thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts and comments. We wish you happy trails…

From the moment was drove into the portico, our interaction with hotel staff couldn't have been better. The valet, check-in, concierge, check-out people all went out of their way to be engaging, courteous and helpful. Hotel management should be proud of the staff they have hired and maintained, I don't think I have come across better. The hotel is clean, quiet and well maintained. We were there during the Napa earthquake (8/24/14) and got a good shaking and the staff handled this incident as well. Also, the hotel is situatedtwo blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. We brought bikes (though you can rent them near-by) and rode from the hotel to Tiburon and took the ferry back. You can find the route on TA; I highly recommend it. I also highly recommend this hotel if business or pleasure takes you to San Francisco.

I liked this hotel - nice accommodations, great location and friendly staff. It's a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, so it's easy to get where you want to go. There is nice restaurant in the same building and several within walking distance.

Green Features: You can get $5 back per day by deciding not to do the maid service

We had 1 night to spend in San Francisco and we picked the Best Western Tuscan due to the great location very close to Fishermans Wharf. The room was very clean and nice we had enough room for our family of 4. The price was very reasonable compared to all the other hotels in this area. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to walk to Fishermans Warf and surrounding area.

San Francisco hotels are pricey but this was one that is worth the money, good location for fisherman's wharf. Customer service was excellent even by American standards.
Get your breakfast at Hollywood cafe down the road and have a look in the cost plus world market shop between the two as well - great for browsing.

Really good location for a first time traveller to San Francisco. Extremely comfy beds. friendly helpful staff. Very noisy though as our room was facing the road; I felt like I was actually sleeping at the bus stop directly opposite and had to wear ear plugs. Could be sorted with some decent well sealed windows!!

Room Tip: Avoid road facing rooms

Expected a nice clean environment, but not the quaint beauty of this Best Western ideally located to enjoy the SF Wharf, with terrific variety of restaurants within walking distance, and prices to fit any budget. Staff were exceptionally friendly and professional and efficient. Rooms are surprisingly spacious and smartly furnished. Perhaps the best value in San Francisco.
