This hotel has a beautiful lobby, professional staff & 5 star feel. However, the rooms are small with larger than needed furniture and bathrooms that are average. There are beautiful touches throughout the hotel, great sushi restaurant (from what we heard), but rooms & their carpeting feel worn & are in need of some space saving touches (like a built-in desk & shelving) in order to feel really upscale. Add to that that it sits in the tenderloin district (filled with the cities homeless and drug dealers) & it is definitely not a family friendly place to stay & one many of you may not want to chose. We had a car, however & traveled out of the city quite a bit. Otherwise, I would not plan to stay here and walk in the area, especially at night. Overall, it is a nice hotel. Room service food was way better than average & the staff we encountered was the same, but you really don't see them unless you stop at the front desk or walk to the front doors. The extra fee's for everything: $16 wifi, 50+ for overnight parking, 20 gym fee & 6 for in room water, made us feel like we were being milked and our agreed upon nightly rate turning into a "never again" experience. One positive note I'd like to add is that Starbucks is adjacent to the hotel, all you need do is open a hotel door & you're there:)

Room Tip: Get the biggest room you can afford.

Hello Marrie&inLove (I love your name!)-
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I will share your comments about the hotel décor needing an update with the General Manager as we are always looking to improve and the concerns about the neighborhood and homeless issues in San Francisco with the City Manager. Tourism enjoyment is important to the city and a focus. We do have hotel security throughout and in front the hotel and cameras, so you are protected within the vicinity.

We appreciate your compliments about the exceptional customer service from the staff you encountered and the food from Anzu Restaurant. Consider choosing a special package from the Hotel Nikko website which includes many of the amenities you listed and often an upgraded room choice at a discount.

All the Best,
Anne Hudson

We stayed here for three nights and had a lovely room on the 17th floor. The room included a safe, iron, real hangers, wonderful towels, one robe/slipper set (we did not bother to ask for a second one), very small coffee maker, bathroom amenities, shower (with an additional hand held device which we could never figure out), iron and ironing board, two luggage racks, desk, chair with ottoman, very comfortable bed, etc. The hotel would rank higher if there were such amenities as a vanity mirror and better bedside reading lights and if they had had the second robe and slippers by realizing in advance that we had booked the two of us.
The note by the small refrigerator is difficult to read, but basically says that if you touch anything in the minibar, you will automatically be charged! So don't move anything. Use the small personal space on the right side. The $16/day internet fee is ridiculous, but typical, it seems, for high priced hotels. Use the wifi in Union Square (SFO provided) or in the Starbucks at the lower corner of Nikko's (we could not locate the name of the wireless connection there for some reason.) We had very noisy neighbors one evening, but a call to the management yielded excellent results in a very short period of time. The location is great, within easy walking distance from the BART station at Powell (we took the BART from the airport), just down the street from the Hertz (we rented a car from there for the balance of our trip), and close to the bus stops (we took the bus out to the Legion of Honor one day). There were courtesy newspapers in the lobby if you got there early. We did not use the pool or gym.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and you wrote such a thorough account of your stay too! We do hope you'll return soon and consider utilizing the Special Packages on the Hotel Nikko Website for inclusion of amenities like WiFi that you mentioned you wanted. As you mentioned, Starbuck's adjacent and accessible from the Hotel Nikko lobby has free WiFi and if there are challenges accessing the Starbuck's staff can help.

We arrived the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and found ourselves in a situation. We had booked another hotel and when we got there it was not what we were told it would be. We were at this point walking and looking for a place for six nights. HOTEL NIKKO SAVED MY VACATION!!! Walked up to the counter and the gentleman was more than helpful. He was courteous and promptly had us a room. I regret not jotting down his name...he deserves a shout out. 16th floor, beautiful clean room. The pictures on this sight really are what it looks like!!!. We had a wonderful stay. The staff were courteous and very helpful with directions, booking tours etc. Our room was cleaned and put in order promptly each day. We have, and will continue to refer our friends/family to Hotel Nikko!! Very close to all forms of transportation and across the street from a Chipolte and down the street from a little throwback diner called Pinecrest, which were both very good. The Anzu bar in the hotel is also quite enjoyable. Thank you Hotel Nikko!!!!

Room Tip: our floor (16) had very little street noise.

We stayed here as part of a conference. The room was on the smaller side but completely adequate and comfortable. Robes were provided which was a nice surprise. The bathroom was roomy and shower excellent. We were on the 11 th floor and heard a lot of street noise and sirens, etc. We enjoyed the anzu bar for appetizers and drinks as well.
Overall, no complaints, but would try to stay on a higher floor if possible! Also be aware if you head east and south from the hotel, you may find yourself in an area called the tenderloin which is not a very pedestrian friendly area! Many many homeless people...

Room Tip: Choose higher floors for less street noise!

I will pass along your comments to the City Manager about the homeless in San Francisco; it's a current initiative that is a high priority.

OK stay, not cheap. Downtown location near Union square. Why does this hotel need to charge daily fees (Under correction $15 per day for WiFi and $20 to use the gym and pool?). Do visit Chipotle take-aways across the road -- fantastic food.
Next time will stay in Sausolito (easy Ferry ride across Bay with great views of Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz // or take BigBus from the parking area into SanFran) or closer to the Wharf.

Room Tip: Go as high floor as possible to reduce noise level.

Hi luap123141,
We're glad you recently stayed with Hotel Nikko and we appreciate your feedback! To answer your question, some of our guests are not interested in the additional amenities, so they prefer to enjoy the lowest room rates. Also, when you do decide to return, I'd like to suggest you look at Special Packages on the Hotel Nikko website, which includes some of the amenities you mentioned.

Best,
Anne Hudson

The impression you have at the lobby ends when you enter the room (we had normal queen kinda room)... but its not bad hotel at all, maybe expected bit more!

+ central location
+ valet parking works well
+ super staff at the concierge
+ nice restaurants

- clean level was very poor in our case (dust not done, in toilet had questionable stains)
- wifi costs
- small room, would need renovation soon

Anyway, still probably one of the good choices in the center of SF, price/quality wise. As everywhere in SF, parking costs quite a bit.

My wife and I typically stay at Marriot properties, however for our 10th anniversary, we decided to try something new. (One thing I forgot to add here..We are hotel SNOBS !!!) We loved Hotel Nikko, the rooms were CLEAN, nice and comfortable. The gym was top notch, better than our personal gym back in Atlanta, Ga. The breakfast buffet was awesome !! Mind you, I love my pancakes and grits (country boy, yes) however with the many choices available, I didn't miss it all. The concierge service was first class, you can get a lot of your questions answered via text which was very convenient when you're out and about and need directions. Desiree is top notch and very personable. I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel given the proximity to union square as well as other attractions.

Room Tip: Ask for a upper level room with a view of the city.
