Pros:
1) Close to everything.
2) Attractive lobby

Cons:
1) They tell you there's WIFI. There definitely is not. They tell every guest "there must be something wrong with your device", yet 50 people are experience the same issue. I do not appreciate a bait and switch routine with WIFI. Don't mislead customers.
2) Dated in-room furnishings
3) Dirty bathroom caulking, leaking bathroom faucets
4) Dirty rugs in room.
5) Rooms and hallways do not smell good.

Room Tip: There are other, better choices in the same price range.

We spent 3 nights here and were satisfied. It's an older building, but it's well kept. It was much more affordable than many other hotels in SF. The location isn't bad. You are within walking distance to many sites, but make sure you're in shape if you plan on walking. The hills can be rough. The breakfast buffet was average, but adequate, if you're not looking for a gourmet meal. Wifi isn't available, but that didn't bother us. Based on some of the pictures I've seen on here, room quality can vary. Ours was basic, but perfect for what we needed. I've stayed in many nicer hotels, but would stay here again.

This hotel was a great hotel in the 70's but has not been renovated since then. The rooms were well used and so was the interior and the beds also. It was well maintained but old, so old that some of the furniture's were broken. I did't know that so old tv's still worked Imagine the carpets, I think they had a life of their own

I booked a Saturday night which cost around $199 and it is probably the worst sleep I have ever had in a hotel but I will come back to that. When I first arrived I felt like I had entered an old peoples home and like many of the comments have said there was a certain "musty" smell that was ever present in the reception and the corridors. The lift took an age to arrive but luckily we figured out we were only on the next floor down so didn't have to take it often. The room was relatively large although dated as many of the other reviewers have highlighted. The décor was something akin to a 1970's pornographic shoot with lots of gold trim in the bathroom that needed updating. The windows overlooked an alleyway that was not very appealing and acted as somewhat of a sound amplifier for the noise on the high street. I guess this is a historic building so the wooden sash windows are retained but they let in so much noise - I was woken several times during the night by sirens (I'm not sure if there is a fire station nearby - it felt like it). Then there was the general noise of the partygoers singing at 3am in all its unfiltered glory! The doors are also very thin and I heard all the guests arriving and going as if they were entering my own room. I would not recommend this hotel for the price - it's certainly not worth if and if you want to sleep....just avoid

Room Tip: Do not go in room 209 it is sooooo loud!

For the first time in my online-review-career, I'm going to make a point of the cleaning. The place feels over-the-hill.
Best: Central, close to a number of great restaurants, five-ten minutes walk to downtown. Accomodating staff
Worst: A block away from junkie-town, breakfast, cleanliness.

The room was fine. There was no view and only one elevator for 8 floors. Luckily I was only one floor below the lobby so I could take the stairs..The area to the west of it was not that good

The wi-fi only worked in the lobby and not that well.

Rooms were great, nice and clean. In a great location. Really close to union square. They also provide wine, cheese and crackers in the afternoon which was great. Only problem was the breakfast. The designated area was in the foyer eating over coffee tables with not enough seats for all the guests. The selection was some cakes and fruit. Not really a sustainable breakfast for sightseeing. Other then that the hotel was very good with friendly and informative staff.
